James Willford Needham

Hello again Elaine, I do have a query, My gggrandad James Willford Needham and his wife, Mary had a son called Herbert born about 1892 in Swinton Yorks. According to a lady on the Family Search.org site, said that Herbert died aged 3. But there were 2 Herberts born around the same time. Well my GGgrandads brother Aaron Needham and his wife Eunice, on their 1901 census had a Herbert, stating he was their adopted son, and on the 1911 census said he was their nephew, they were living in Ecclesall. Herberts mother died 1892, so I'm wondering if the said relations did adopt Herbert because Mary and James had a younger son as well.
Hope you can understand all this. I've tried all kinds to follow this up, but to no avail.
I would love to have this mystery solved. Herbert sadly, was killed in the first world war.
Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards, Glynis.

James Willford born 1852/3 in Sheffield.
Mary Ellen born 1855 in Derbyshire.

Re: James Willford Needham

Hi Glynis,

I believe the correct birth registration is this one;
Herbert Needham Q2 1891, Rotherham, MMN Downing.

Downing is also the MMN for Myrtle Needham.

James Willford Needham married Mary Ellen Smith, 15 Sep 1873 at Handsworth P.C.
Mary Ellen was a widow and her fathers name was Philip Downing.

In 1891 James W. Needham aged 38, already had six children, the yougest being
only one year old. As his wife Mary Ellen died not long after the birth of
Herbert, it would have been very difficult for him to look after a young baby,
so presumably Aaron and Eunice offered to look after Herbert.

By 1901, James and six of his children are living in Barnsley, so perhaps
contact was lost between the two families.

Re: James Willford Needham

Thank you for replying to my query. I would just like to ask how do you differentiate between the two Herberts born around the same time in Rotherham? Because the two Herberts births only had their year of births in Rotherham.
I didn't know anything about Herberts birth or death until a lady on Family Search had him on her family tree.
Hope you can help me with this one. Regards, Glynis.

Re: James Willford Needham

Hi Glynis,

The births of the two Herberts on FMP give the mothers maiden names.
The other Herbert Needham has the mothers maiden name 'Mosley'.

Re: James Willford Needham

Hello, thank you for all your help. I found a Thomas Needham and Annie Mosley. I don't know exactly if they were the parents of Herbert. Annie was born at Treeton, Rotherham, and Thomas was born in Derbyshire. It fits in my opinion, what do you think?
When I get the thumbs up, I will contact the lady on Family Search and let her know how you have helped me. So grateful for your time and info. Regards Glynis.
