Lionel Batty had 2 children that died aged 3 nd 20 months according to records here, there are no other records like baptisms etc.

The odd thing is the two children of Lionel and his wife are buried in the same grave as my great grandparents,I am trying to find out why this would be and if there is any connection as the children were buried in 1899 and 1905

BATTY, George William (~, age 3).
Died at 61 Spooner Rd; Buried on November 13, 1899 in ~ ground;
Grave Number 499, Section A of Walkley Cemetery Cemetery, Nichols Rd.
Parent or Next of Kin if Available: ~. Remarks: ~.

BATTY, Willie (~, age 20 months).
Died at 22 Stephen Hill; Buried on June 3, 1905 in ~ ground;
Grave Number 499, Section A of Walkley Cemetery Cemetery, Nichols Rd.
Parent or Next of Kin if Available: ~. Remarks: ~.

But my grandparents 30 odd years later, seems a bit strange A) that the parents were not buried with their children and in a different cemetary and why my ancestors are in the same grave.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Hi Zo,

I am also a Batty researcher but much further back. BUT I do remember there was a family on Crookes Road in my tree. Its just finding them.LOL.

Can you go further back than Lionel? One or two generations would help.

I do not have a Lionel in my tree. At the moment.:grinning:

Hello Zo

Sometimes if you follow the timelines of the burials you find that a grave purchased for a specific number of burials were sometimes used for "unexpected" family burials, before the intended people it had originally been purchased for, had died.

Perhaps the plot was purchased for 4 "adult" burials but the two childrens unexpected deaths meant that another plot had to be purchased elsewhere ?

Just a theory but I have often seen plots like this.

Hi Zo,

The children are buried in consecrated ground at St Marys Walkley
The adults at Crookes unconsecrated.

I have had a quick look at that line and it goes Lionel- George-John who was from Upperthong.

They are not my Batty's by the way. (Ecclesfield/Attercliffe).

Re: Battys In SheffieldCrookes

Thank You I have found a family tree of a relative of Lionel Batty and have messaged so maybe they know why the children have been buried there just seems very strange.

Re: Battys In SheffieldCrookes

Hello Zo

I think I/we misunderstood your post,

Is it that the BATTYS are not related to you and you are trying to find a connection ?

It is not at all unusual for totally unrelated folk to be buried together.

Cheers Tony

Re: Battys In SheffieldCrookes

It’s ok I found a living relative

I was told it was unusual for people to be buried in the same grave as it was a private grave.
