List of Apprentices

From this site I've found 2 apprentices but need help in deciphering the meanings on the records.

Egginton William son of William Sheffield park lab.dec. to Barker Samuel c: 7-7 1771

Egginton William son of William optician to Ashburn James sc: 7 1802

It's the numbers I'm struggling with if anyone can help

many thanks

Jenny

Re: List of Apprentices

Jenny,
I believe the 7-7 is 7 YRS AND 7 months from 1771 so he would be 21 after that time , ie in 1778/9
By the same method the second would be 21 in 1809.

Re: List of Apprentices

Many thanks for explaining that Dave.

Re: List of Apprentices

Jenny, it is worth adding that for neither of these apprentices is there a record that they purchased their freedom at the end of their apprenticeships. This means that neither of them found it necessary to purchase a trade mark

Thanks for the additional info. Something I didn't know about.
