I'm trying to trace back through the Hancock line in my wife's family, and have drawn a bit of a blank on a Mary Smith (never an easy sort of name to trace!) who married Simon Hancock on 20 July 1789 at the parish church. There is a record at family search showing the marriage but nothing of parents (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NL7N-7QP).
Are the images of the records for this period available anywhere online, and would they show Mary Smith's father's name if they are?
When Simon Hancock married Ann Rodgers in 1769, one of the witnesses was a
William Hancock.
Simon and Ann appear to have had at least seven children, Grace 1770, Hannah 1773,
William 1775, John 1778, Mary 1781, Elizabeth 1783 and Samuel 1787.
On all but one of the baptisms, the father Simon is down as a blacksmith.
A possible burial for Mary 24/10/1805 Ecclesall, wife of Simon Hancock.
That record however gives his trade as a whitesmith, not a blacksmith, so not sure if the right one.
Possible baptism for Simon 15/07/1746 Sheffield, father William a blacksmith.
Possible burial for him 2/2/1817 Ecclesall.
Pity no ages showing for Mary Smith though. So as you suggest it is going to be difficult to trace her. Do you know if Simon and Mary had any children?
You said that Simon was born ca 1801 in Sheffield? I can’t find his baptism...
Is he the one who was the chimney sweep in Radford Notts?
The 1861 census indeed says he was born in Sheffield but in the 1851 it says Manchester.
Hi - yes, that's the Simon I believe it is. I've been taking the census records with a pinch of salt, as he seems to have had something of a shady life in Nottingham, including several court appearances after domestic incidents among other things!
