Hi,
There are two baptisms on here that may be part of my family line but I can't find them on GRO, any ideas please?
The details are:
Kelly, Jacobus (of ~, born 1866-04-26).
Baptised May 6, 1866, by L. Cahill at St Vincents, Sheffield Centre.
Parents name(s) are Brigittae Haid & Danielis ().
Note:
Godparents: Thomas Hogan Margarita Farrell :Page No 229 :Reg No
(I believe mmmn is Hayes but I need to confirm this)
Reilly, Jacobus (of 10 Acton Place, born 1880-06-10).
Baptised June 23, 1880, by J. Fitzgerald at St Vincents, Sheffield Centre.
Parents name(s) are Mariae Kelly & Bernardi ().
Note:
Godparents: David Kelly Bridgida Kelly :Page No 487 :Reg No
I am presuming that Jacobus is Jacob.
Many thanks,
Claire
Thanks Hugh,
I was presuming the name to be Jacob, never thought Jacobus would translate to James.
I’m not sure about the Heath surname but I’ll do a bit more researching to check it out.
Thanks again,
Claire
Could James Reilly have been the little James Reilly who was buried at St. Vincent’s on 27 March 1881 aged 9 months?
James Kelly might have had a short life too, because there was a James Kelly, aged three, buried at St. Vincent’s on 14 Feb 1869.
The popular and respected priests at St. Vincent’s were familiar with Irish surnames, so the surnames can be spelled differently between the records of the church and secular records (censuses and stuff) as well as the first names being latinised.
There’s a website with a list of first names as written in Latin, and some info on how the names change in different contexts because of Latin grammar:
Hi Andrew,
They certainly seem like the burials for my two.
My maternal line are all RC and I have come across a variety of spellings for both Riley and Kelly while researching, and use a translating website as a guide for the entries, as there are often little notes added (which can give another lead) but generally all in Latin.
But Jacobus was translating to Jacob so that was throwing me. The website you mention is great, I’ll have no problems with the names now.
Many thanks for your help.
Claire
