I have been researching Wortley Union and believe it was a poor house, unless someone can set me straight? I have tracked down several membrs of the Goodison clan being listed as born Wortley Union on the GRO index. What I find confuisng is that the father and mother show up each year(along with some of the children at various stages) as living at knoll Top. So why does it say the children born at Wortley union? did it double as a hospital?
The registration districts were set up with the introduction of civil registration in 1837 and were aligned with the poor law union. So although there is a Wortley Union workhouse there is also a Wortley registration district.
Sarah, No, It means born in the Wortley Union Registration District.

Edit. Knoll top was (and is) in Stannington, which was in the Wortley Union Registration District at that time
