Michael and Mary Callaghan (nee McNerney) 1890’s Sheffield
I am researching the Irish community in Sheffield related to my family. The above were my great grandparents and lived at 2 Croft, Furnace Hill Sheffield in May 1891 when my grandmother Beatrice Callaghan was born..
The 1901 census shows them in Allen St (was this the same as 2 Court??) with Mary as head of household with 6 children including Beatrice.
Any specifics or even general information about the Irish community in Sheffield at that time would hep enormously in my search.
Many thanks in anticipation. This census also shows 8 members of another family also at this address. - “Ludlum?” - hard to read on the form.

Morning Roger,
If you look over to the left at "Cherished Memories" and then look at the index there you will see "St Vincents". Thats where you will find more about the Irish Community in Sheffield.

Hi Roger
The excellent article Elaine has mentioned should really help you get an understanding of the Irish community at the time. But, Furnace Hill is a couple of streets away from Allen Street.
On the 1901 census it is the Ludlams - they are living in the same Court as the Callaghans, but in a different house. So, the Ludlams are living at 12 Court 11 House, while the Callaghans were living at 12 Court 13 House.
