Hi everyone
I am looking for the name and location of a Tin Factory in Sheffield in 1911. My Grandmother worked there. I think they were making lunch boxes at the time but not sure. This is all the information I have so it's a long shot, hope someone is a good detective and can help me.
Thank you very much for any help.
Yours
Valerie
I don’t know about 1911, but I have a 1923 directory. The only tin box manufacturer listed in that was Joseph Pickering & Sons Ltd at 57 Moore St. (who also made cardboard boxes.) Perhaps someone can check if they were around in 1911 as well.
It appears to be an Arthur Truelove who ran a tin plate and cardboard box company on Moore Street, also made tin boxes. Arthur married Mary, the daughter of Joseph Pickering and in 1900 the two companies merged to become Joseph Pickering & Sons Ltd.,
Hi Angela
I am not 100% my Grandma did but it looks promising time was right and she only lived 3 miles from the factory on the 1911 census. You wouldn't know if they have employee records for this company any place would you? Have a great day.
There are a few items relating to this company in Sheffield Archives but I can't see anything that is likely to have names of employees. You can find the catalogue entries by using the National Archives search engine at https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk. I searched for "Joseph Pickering" Sheffield (with the speech marks)
