Cornish in Sheffield

One of my great grandfathers William Chegwin came to Sheffield on his own from Redruth Cornwall at the age of 19 to be a hairdresser. Knowing that there are Cornish names of steel works I would like to find out more about Cornish links to Sheffield and if there is anything published on the subject.

Re: Cornish in Sheffield

Vivien,as far as I can see the various Cornish works were so named because they were on Cornish Lane or Cornish Place in Neepsend. No connection to Cornwall.

Re: Cornish in Sheffield

Thank you Dave. Now I am wondering why Cornish Lane was so called and Truro works etc. Viv.

Re: Cornish in Sheffield

Hi Viv, it was to do with the production of Britannia metal which was made from tin sourced from Cornwall.
