Searching for Dunning ancestors

Hi, I am looking for information about a John Dunning who emmigrated to the US about 1800. I have this information from our family history: "John Dunning who came to America was a native of the Parish of Throper in the County of Yorkshire, England. The record of his birth can be obtained at the St. John's Church in the Parish of Sheffield, England." He was born Feb. 22, 1783. He had three brothers, George, James and Samuel, who also came to the US. John was married to Mary Stock in the US, and his mother's last name was Stull.

I did a search of the parish records you have available and see no mention of any Dunnings so wondering if I'm in the right place? Or perhaps the spelling has been changed. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Searching for Dunning ancestors

Hi Wendy,

I can not see where there is a "Throper" in Yorkshire.

There are a couple of places called Thorpe and Thorner.

What other info do you have re Throper......

I also see that you say his birth was 23rd Feb 1783 entered at St John Sheffield.

Very few Churches in Sheffield at that time and the Parish Church was the main church called St Peter & Paul. This is now the Cathedral. The earliest St John was not built until about 1840.

Have you checked on Family Search as I believe that all the Baptisms for the Cathedral have been entered there. I will check Ancestry out for you and get back to you.

Re: Searching for Dunning ancestors

Hi Elaine/Wendy

At a guess I would think Throper, if it is our area, is referring to St John's Church, Throapham, now in the parish of All Saints,Laughton-en-le-Morthern in Rotherham.
I'm not sure but it may well be a redundant church now, or at least rarely used.

Re: Searching for Dunning ancestors

Hi, all:

Thanks for all the links and suggestions. I'm also wondering if it was Throapham and my great-aunt mis-transcribed. Unfortunately, that was back in the 1950s, so no way to find out for sure at this point.

I don't know if he was Methodist or Church of England.

I will check in on the links that you have all provided. Thanks again!

Re: Searching for Dunning ancestors

Wendy, typically the Sheffield accent/dialect at that time would have pronounced Throapham as Throper. I have several similar examples in my tree

Re: Searching for Dunning ancestors

Hi Wendy,

Someone called Mark Dunning from the Guild of One Name Studies is researching the Dunning surname.
Maybe he could help?
