On the three baptisms you have given, John is always down as a 'scale cutter'.
I have found another baptism, Elizabeth daughter of John and Mary Turton,
scale cutter, baptised 4 October 1801 at Sheffield Parish Church.
This would put the marriage at Wakefield in 1803 after the 1801 baptism, so I
do not think this is the right marriage.
I could not find a marriage for John and Mary in Sheffield, but, there is this one..
John Turton married Mary Lister, 26 November 1792, St Mary, Barnsley, Yks.
Barnsley is north of Sheffield and a lot closer than Wakefield.
Moira this sounds more logical, the marriage you mentioned occupation Scale cutter
There is an 1841 census,
Hundred Strafforth and Tickhill (South Division)County/Island Yorkshire Country England Registration

I will change the name over if you feel Mary LISTER is much more likely to be correct
Barry
I can't say proof positive that the Barnsley marriage is the right one,
but, it seems a better option than the Wakefield marriage. I wonder if
John was from Sheffield and Mary from the Barnsley area.
It sounds hopeful that someone else has picked up on the Mary Lister connection.
I have been trying to tie up Mary Lister to the Barnsley area.
There was a Mary Lister bap 6 Nov 1774 at Sheffield Parish Church, father, Jeremiah.
Then, Mary Lister dau of Jeremiah, buried 11 Sep 1776, Sheffield Parish Church.
Mary Lister bap 4 April 1773, Barnburgh, Yks. parents Benjamin and Anne.
Barnburgh is very close to Bolton-upon-Dearn which is south east of Barnsley.
Wether this is the right baptism I don't know, but it is the closest I can get
to finding a connection to Barnsley.
