Glynn,
On the 1871 census in Lancashire there is an unmarried James May, born in Ireland about 1850. Have you eliminated him from your search?
Plenty of time for him to cross the Pennines and marry the widow Mary Dunn, nee Murphy, in 1875.
The wedding cert you have should state the martital status of James before the marriage.
There is something not right about the birth of Mary Dunn's third child, Eliza according to 1881 census, but Elizabeth ( mmn Murphy) according to GRO birth reg. She was apparently born 3 years after her father died.
Dave
Yes i have eliminated the James may in Lancashire he died in an accident. James was unmarried on the certificate. And as for the children George Jr was born in 1872 and Eliza born 1873 and agree that George Snr died 1871, strange?

Barry,
James was born in County Mayo according to the 1901 census, but his father was called Patrick (Deceased) on the 1875 marriage certificate. Good find that one, James could have been mistaken when he did the 1901 census. In actual fact this is the only reason I know he was born in Mayo from the entry in the 1901.
