James May in Sheffield

Good morning all,

I have a relative named James May b Mayo Ireland 1849. The first i find of him in Sheffield is on a marriage certificate dated 12th July 1875 and have tried to locate him previous to this date. The address given on the marriage certificate is 22, Blagdon Street, Park, Sheffield. I cant find him in Sheffield before this date, which could mean that he was not in Sheffield prior to 1875, but, I would have thought he had been because he was marrying a lady who had been in Sheffield for many years. I have looked on Census records etc and no trace. Where else is there i could look to help me find him please?

Regards

Re: James May in Sheffield

How sure are you about his wife being born in Sheffield, The 1881 census has her down as being born in Ireland and has two daughters before their marriage. So was Mary Dunn married before? James May Head M 32 Ireland
Mary May Wife F 33 Ireland
Jane Dunn (May) Step Daughter F 12 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Eliza Dunn (May) Step Daughter F 7 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Patrick May Son M 3 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
James May Son M 0 Sheffield, Yorkshire, England

Re: James May in Sheffield

Hi Barry,

Have you checked the GRO index out for the mothers maiden name of all the children .

That might help sort out if she was from Sheffield or Ireland.
What was James occupation?
Was he a Bachelor when he married?

Scrambling to think of what else he might be listed on.

James was a General Labourer. As for if he was married before, pass, i really cannot find a trace of him pre 1875 even in the Irish records. Really am stumped with this one

Re: James May in Sheffield

Glynn,
On the 1871 census in Lancashire there is an unmarried James May, born in Ireland about 1850. Have you eliminated him from your search?
Plenty of time for him to cross the Pennines and marry the widow Mary Dunn, nee Murphy, in 1875.
The wedding cert you have should state the martital status of James before the marriage.
There is something not right about the birth of Mary Dunn's third child, Eliza according to 1881 census, but Elizabeth ( mmn Murphy) according to GRO birth reg. She was apparently born 3 years after her father died.

Yes i have eliminated the James may in Lancashire he died in an accident. James was unmarried on the certificate. And as for the children George Jr was born in 1872 and Eliza born 1873 and agree that George Snr died 1871, strange?

Barry,

James was born in County Mayo according to the 1901 census, but his father was called Patrick (Deceased) on the 1875 marriage certificate. Good find that one, James could have been mistaken when he did the 1901 census. In actual fact this is the only reason I know he was born in Mayo from the entry in the 1901.

Re: James May in Sheffield

On the burial records on this site there is a James May buried in 1922 in Crookes Cemetery with a Mary May and a George Johnson. Is this your James?

Re: James May in Sheffield

Glynn, according to GRO index George Junior was born in 1871 q2 and George senior died in q4 1871, George Junior died in q3 1872.
