Mr Wood's Acadamy

Hi,

Today i've been given two books that were gifts to my great x 2 grandfather when he was a pupil at Mr Wood's Acadamy. Years were 1868 & 1870. I cannot find any information regarding the school and wondered if anyone had come across it before and knew anything about it? One of the books had Weston Street & Mitchell Street written underneath it.

There is a schoolmaster called Adam Wood who is in the trade directories on this site in 1871 and on census. I've seen a couple of newspaper articles that reference him and I have seen Weston Street within the articles so I think he maybe 'Mr Wood' in the title of the school.

Claire,
Have you looked for him in the censuses?

Re: Mr Wood's Acadamy

Hi Claire,

On the 61,71,81 and 91 census entries, Adam Wood, Schoolmaster, is living with
his twin brother Samuel at 41 Sarah Street, Sheffield. Some of the newspaper
ads for the Weston St/Mitchell St Acadamies, do name the Schoolmaster as Adam Wood.
In the newspapers at that time, there are quite a few entries for 'Acadamies'
so would appear to be quite popular. My father attended Barton Acadamy in the
early 1930's, but the only information I have about it are two newspaper advertisements.

Moira.
