marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

Trying to find the wife of William Charlesworth born 1834
His Child Arthur, born 1881 parents William and Sarah Ann Charlesworth (my Relative)

1881 census for William Charlesworth
Occupation Table Blade Striker Registration district Sheffield Sub registration district South Sheffield ED, institution, or vessel 9a Piece 4651 Folio 76 Page number 40
This census has many family members, i tried looking for baptism records to see if they all had Sarah Ann Charlesworth as mother.

The burial records on the Sheffield indexes for William and Sarah Ann.
William died 1910 (Table Blade Striker)
Sarah Ann died 1916

There is a marriage for a Sarah Ann Palmer, this marriage will be wrong as Sarah would be to young.

I believe William married a relative Sarah Ann Charlesworth possible a cousin???

The youngest child Clara was born 1869. which makes me believe the marriage would be between 1860 and 1869???

I have the 1881, 1891, & 1901 census confirming ages.
All help appreciated
Barry

Just found a birth for Sarah Ann Charlesworth 1840 sheffield, possible wife???

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

The GRO (birth) index shows mother's maiden name as Wales (if we have the right Arthur, but he's the only one registered around Sheffield 1880-82) :
CHARLESWORTH, ARTHUR WALES
GRO Reference: 1881 D Quarter in SHEFFIELD Volume 09C Page 448

Best wishes,

Geoffrey :relaxed:

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

I looked at a couple of the other children from the 1881 census and also found Clara (Clara Ellen) and Walter with mmn of Wales. On that census there is a Charles Wales living with them as a boarder.

I've also gone back to the 1871 census and there are 2 daughters older than Clara - Mary Ann B 1858 and Ann B 1865 (Ann is also on the 1881 census as Annie).

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

I think Mary Ann CHARLESWORTH in 1871 is the same person as the boarder Mary Ann MIDDLETON in 1881.

Sarah Ann WALES married Charles Hattersley MIDDLETON 20 Jan 1859 at Sheffield Parish Church.

In 1861 I think they are living at 7 Lord St Attercliffe.

There is no father listed for George MIDDLETON on the marriage certificate. In the 1861 household George is the 'son-in-law' (probably step-son) of James WOLSTENHOLME and Ann. There is marriage between James WOLSTENHOLME and Ann HATTERSLEY in 1838.

None of which explains how Sarah Ann became Sarah Ann CHARLESWORTH by 1871.

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

Hi

There is a marriage for Sarah A WALES (aged 18)to George Hattersley MIDDLETON on 30 Jan 1859 at the Parish Church.

Also a birth registration in Sheffield for Mary A MiDDLETON mother's maiden name WALES in the March Q of 1859.

This will be the Mary A aged 13 on the 1871 census.

I would suggest that you are looking for a marriage between Sarah A Middleton and William Charlesworth. Assuming that George Hattersley Middleton has died.

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

Hugh, this may shed a little light or more confusion??

In the 1911 census where Sarah Ann Charlesworth is a widow living with Albert and John (children) Charlesworth at 94 Eyre Lane Sheffield.

In the 1911 census which has a line through it, Sarah Ann (Widow) shows she had 52 completed years of marriage!!!! which would make the marriage year 1859??

It says she had 15 children
9 living and 6 had died

This would make the marriage you have in 1859 correct??

I hope i am not adding more fuel to the fire

Barry, that seems consistent with the Middleton marriage.

In the GRO birth index I found three MIDDLETON/WALES children and twelve CHARLESWORTH/WALES children.

If she had married again would she have put 52 years married? I don't know but I cannot find a second marriage. Nor can I identify a death for first husband George, or find him in a census after 1861. His mother and step-father are buried in Attercliffe municipal cemetery.

I think I have found 9 of the children all with maiden name Wales.
Ann 1865
Alice 1867
Clara Ellen 1869
William 1875
Thomas 1876
Albert 1878
Arthur 1881
Walter 1880

Ann 1865
Alice 1867
Clara Ellen 1869
William 1875
Thomas 1876
Albert 1878
Arthur 1881

Theres also

Emily 1871
Harriet 1873
John Henry 1886

All Wales/Charlesworth

And
Mary Ann 1859
James 1860
George 1862

So just one more child left to identify to match the 1911 census record!

Sorry I can't count I only put 8 down!!!! I found Emily but missed her my list!!!

Excellent Susan - think that makes a full house as far as the children are concerned!!!

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

In the March quarter of 1859 Vol 9c page 297
there is a marriage of a Sarah Ann Wales. There are several other names but the husbands and spouses don't add up - could William Charlesworth be missed off.
The census records show the name Sarah Ann as Williams wife. Not sure how to find the missing spouse.

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

Hi Susan

I think its been discovered that Sarah Ann Wales married George Hattersley Middleton in the March Q of 1859. She was living with George on the 1861 census and had her last child with George in 1862.

Sometime after 1862 it seems she gets together with William Charlesworth (hence William on the Census after 1861) and its a possible marriage between Sarah Ann Middleton and William Charlesworth, after 1862 thats elusive (if indeed they married at all!).

Re: marriage of William Charlesworth between 1855 and 1875??

Hugh there is a marriage 28 November 1891 for a Mary Ann Middleton age 32, (birth 1859) to Samuel Shaw fathers name George Middleton. Could this be the missing George Middleton?? It doesn't say George is deceased.
If George is still alive perhaps Sarah Ann (Wales) married to George Middleton never did marry William Charlesworth???
