Re: horace mappin

Hi Ken

Ive found 2 Horace Mappins born Sheffield one in 1888 and one in 1890.

On the 1911 census theres a Horace Mappin aged 22 born in Sheffield -hes in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps in Gosport.

Struggling a bit after that as there are a number of Horace Mappins of the right age in various parts of the country. With nothing to help narrow it down.

Dont suppose you have any idea who he married??

Re: horace mappin

Hi Ken,

1939 register, 28 Reeves Road, Torquay, Devon.
Horace Mappin, born 11 Jan 1888, Inspector of Postmen, married.
Ivy Mappin, born 13 May 1889, Assistant school mistress, married.
Marjorie E. Mappin (Smith), born 15 Aug 1914, single.
Three closed records.

1901 census, 14 Fornham St,Sheffield.
Joseph Howard, 70, Night watchman, born Sheffield.
Sarah Howard, 72, born Manchester.
Eleanor Mappin, granddaughter, 22, born Sheffield.
Sam Mappin, grandson, 17, Machine file cutter, born Sheffield.
Horace Mappin, grandson, 13 (1888), File warehouse boy, born Sheffield.

1891 census, Ecclesall Union Workhouse, Sheffield.
Horace Mappin, 3yrs, Scholar/inmate, born Sheffield.

So far I have not found a baptism for Horace, but, Eleanor was baptised
7 July 1880 at St Paul, Pinstone St,Sheffield. Parents are John Thomas
and Eliza Mappin of 6 Queens Road, Sheffield, Brass turner.

There is a marriage at St Mary's, Bramall Lane, 22 December 1878.
John Thomas Mappin, 21, B, Brass turner, Randall St, father Joseph, engraver.
Eliza Howard, 21, S, of Turner St, father, Joseph, Cutler.

In 1881 at Clough Bank Sheffield, John T., Sarah and Eleanor are living
with Joseph and Sarah Howard. Joseph is a cutler, John T. is a brass turner.

Moira.

Re: horace mappin

Hi Ken

Like Moira, I also spotted the 1939 entry for Horace and Ivy Mappin (nee Pike/Pyke). I looked at their marriage - which was an Army marriage in 1913 which fitted, - but Horace was down as 'Horace Howard Mappin', so I put that to one side.

Now that makes sense - 'Howard' doesnt appear as a middle name in the birth register entry (or anywhere else), but is his mothers maiden name which he used at his marriage - maybe he was baptised as 'Horace Howard Mappin'.

I've then found 2 deaths:

Horace Mappin Born 1888 - Died 1964 Middlesborough
Ivy Mappin Born 1889 - died 1980 Cleveland

Re: horace mappin

From GROIndex, Horace Mappin born q1 1888 mother maiden name HOWARD.
You will find his ww1 medal card in the Medal Rolls file on Ancestry, which is free to use.
It shows his number in the Kings Royal Rifles. At the beginning of the war he was Sergeant, and at the end Colour Sergeant. Qualified for the 15 Star, entering France in mid 1915. It states he was discharged, but does not give a date or reason for that. I guess it was because he had completed the 12 years for which he originally signed up.

Edit Eliza Mappin, his mother, died age 29 q41888 ( GRO index.)

Re: horace mappin

Hi

Horace also had another brother-
MAPPIN, JOSEPH ANDREW HOWARD
GRO Reference: 1885 S Quarter in ECCLESALL BIERLOW Volume 09C Page 355

In 1891, Joseph Mappin is an inmate of the workhouse with brother Sam (Samuel on this census).

In 1901, John Mappin is an apprentice living with the Oates family at 43 Woodland Street Sheffield
