This is a long shot I know,but I'm really struggling with any information on my Great Uncle Clifford. He was born in 1919in Sheffield to parents, Charles Smith b 5.2.1892 and Emily Winifred Bagguley b 16.1.1897 - his brother (my Grandad) was born Harold Smith, b 25.5.1921
Now, all that generation have passed away. All my Mum ever knew is that he joined the forces and a few years later, they heard a story that he had defected/absconded and the military police were looking for him. Its a story that got passed down over the years and probably elaborated, but maybe some truth somewhere. I cannot find him anywhere.Neither Clifford or Harold are living with their parents in 1939 according to the 1939 Register, and I know Grandad was in the Coldstream Guards during the war
Sarah, the two brothers must have been called up, so they must have military records. You could try asking for his military record. It has to be done by post to the records office in Glasgow, and it will cost you £30 up front, non-refundable, to have the search done. However if they find them it should be very revealing. You could do a similar request for his brother.

Edit. Conscription was introduced in May 1939 and the 1939 Register was taken on 29 September 1939. All initial conscriptions were complete by the end of he year so your 2 relatives will have been in army camps somewhere at the time the register was taken.

Clifford Smith's baptism is on this site and it gives his date of birth as 28 June 1919. Might help with any searches.
