Thomas Ryalls

Looking for information in Thomas Ryalls, all I have on this man is very sketchy.
Thomas Ryalls born Sheffield 1797 address looks like Trippet Lane,
Wife Elizabeth?
He was employed at a Sheffield firm Roberts and Co. Eyre Street Silver platers.
There is an article in a Sheffield newspaper (Robbery and attempted suicide at Sheffield. it is reported that he offered for sale to a silversmith at Liverpool a large quantity of 370 ounces of silver. He also tried to commit suicide. He was sentenced and sent to Shorncliff Barracks Station with a view to him being deported to (Australia?) this appears to have been between the years of 1851 when he was 55yrs old and appears back in the census in 1861.
Was he sent away as I cannot find any records of him being shipped away.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Thomas Ryalls

Hi, Marlene, My wife's distant relative is Mary Anne Ryalls born 15 April 1828 daughter of Thomas Ryalls and Elizabeth Walker. He is in the 1861 census so not transported. There is a death 3rd quarter 1863 Sheffield which is consistent with his date of birth. regards Barry

Re: Thomas Ryalls

Hi Marlene,

This is the 1851 entry for Shorncliffe Barracks.
Thomas Ryalls, prisoner, married, 55yrs, Clerk, born Attercliffe, Yks.

Shorncliffe was a military base and in a newspaper report in July 1849 it
says that 500 convicts from Millbank Penitentuary were to be located at
Shorncliffe barracks on account of the increase in cholera at that prison.

Moira.
