I am right in thinking that the individual dwellings at the Shrewsbury Hospital in 1851 were almshouses? Does any one know if the tenants had to "qualify" for one or if they just applied.

I knew it when I was a child but am intrigued as to how one got a place.I have other ancestors who had almshouses elsewhere in the city and in all cases they were elderly single women. So further information would be good.
I think this site will interest you, though it is from a few decades later. It includes a letter applying for a place in the Almshouses, signed by many of the great and good of Sheffield. This man is buried in Walkley Cemetery...
