I have hit a brick wall with my ancestor Sophia McClamance.

She first appears when she married Reuben Brackenbury on 14th January 1872 at st Thomas church, brightside, Sheffield.

Her father’s name is given as Samuel McClamance and he was a carpenter. I cannot find anything else at all about him or his wife.

Sophia and Reuben had the following children (May be more) :-

Georgina born in Sheffield 1872 gro says mothers maiden name is Clommance.

William Henry 1874 in Sheffield mmn McClemance

Reuben in Sheffield 1876 mmn McClemance

Harriet Annie in Sheffield 1877 mmn McCleamance

Thomas Seaman in Sheffield 1879 mmn McClements

Andrew Frederick in Lincolnshire 1882 mmn Clements

On the 1881 census they are living in Lincolnshire it gives Sophia’s birthplace as Glasgow Lanarkshire,

Sophia is on the 1901 census living in Sheffield again and is a widow.

I know nothing else about Sophia or her parents so would appreciate any information anyone has on them.

Sorry I forgot to put the dates I have for Sophia- born 1850 died in Sheffield 1918

Looked on Ancestry and a few trees on there - including your own too I think. I have tried Familysearch.org with no luck though there are a few Samuels with possible varied spelling of McClamance born in Scotland.

I have had a couple of Scottish lines myself to follow and it was familysearch.org that gave me leads - however there are no positive leads I have found for this particular name.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to look and to search. Sophia ia a real mystery and I am still searching.

Thanks Lyn for your suggestion but Sophia McCullum married in the same year as Sophia but in Lanarkshire and I know she married Reuben Brackenbury in Sheffield.

However I am thinking Sophia might have come from Ireland as Reuben was in the 1st battalion 16th (Bedfordshire) regiment of foot based in Newry Ireland from 1/4/1871 - 30/6/1871. he married Sophia 14/1/1872 and their daughter Georgina was born 1872 in 4th quarter.

On the 1881 census it says she comes from Glasgow, 1901 census from Scotland and 1911 census Sheffield.
