The answer lies in the GROIndex, which is free to use online. For birth between 1837 and 1915 it gives mother maiden name.
In this case it is KIRK. It looks like he had a brother Douglas born in 1903.

John Thomas Hides, born 13 Dec 1901 and baptised 29 Dec 1901 at St Mary, Bramall Lane.
Parents - Thomas and Mary Elizabeth of 27 London Road, grinder.

As it was a late December birth/bap they will have registered the birth in January.
John Thomas was buried 24 June 1902, aged 6months, City Road Cemetery.
