Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

I'm looking for any information about Thomas Turton who lived on Bayfield (?) street in Sheffield during the 1830-1850s and who corresponded with Richard Carlile the radical who published The Prompter and The Republican and a Every Woman's Book. I think Turton was a book seller, perhaps. He had three children, two daughter and one son--the son died unexpectedly in his early adulthood.

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

Gail, it might help if you could provide us with names and ages of his children.

I don't recognise the street name 'Bayfield' - do you have the original source for that?

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

I'm working at the Huntington Library in Pasadena, California in the Richard Carlile Papers. One of Carlile's letters to Turton has the address of 3 Red Croft, Sheffield.

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

Gail, if you look in our directories over to the left and search Red Croft in Address there are seven answers. The first is for a Thomas Carlisle in 1843/4. He had a house and dram shop.

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

It looks like Turton published a magazine or journal entitled Free Enquirer.

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

It looks like the son's name was also Thomas.

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

It looks like he resided at 3 Red Croft and then 35 Bailey St, both in Sheffield in 1830s.

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

Thanks for all your help!

Re: Thomas Turton (19th century inhabitant of Sheffield)

Gail,
The following burial at Sheffield St Paul may be of interest:
TURTON Thomas 16th Feb 1838 Age 18 of Bailey St. son of Thomas

Also on FMP there is a newspaper article about his death and his grieving parents.
Also in 1841 in a Sheffield newspaper a Thomas Turton of Daisy Walk signs himself as a "Radical"

Perhaps someone with a membership can look at the full articles for you?
