St Nicholas, Bradfield look-up needed please, if possible.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to ask whether anyone has access to the parish records for St Nicholas' church, Bradfield, please - in particular the marriage records.

I am trying to trace the marriage details for my 4xg-grandparents Matthew Darwent (born 1815) and his wife Ann (surname unknown), who were married some time around 1835. Ann's birthplace is shown on some census records as Bradfield, which is why I'm guessing they were married at St Nicholas, although they are living in Chester Lane, Sheffield West, in 1841.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. :slightly_smiling_face:

Donna.

Re: St Nicholas, Bradfield look-up needed please, if possible.

Hi Donna,

If you look over to the left click on Parish Records and you will see what records we have for St Nicholas.

To search the database you will see at the top of the page it says baptisms and marriage.
Click on marriages and then enter the name of the person you are looking for.

Because of spellings and poor page quality look for both parties of the marriage and use the "Wild Card" if still no result.

If they married in Bradfield they should be there. Its some of the much earlier marriages that we had trouble with faded entries.

If still no results leave the name of the Church off the entry as they could of course been married else ware. Most marriages would have taken place at the Cathedral until 1848.

Hi Elaine,

Thanks very much for your help. I haven't had any luck with the search, unfortunately.

Any other tips or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Donna

Hi Donna
According to the Cathedral marriage books Matthew Darwent married Ann Jackson. The book lists marriages between December 1834 and October 1835 but has no exact dates. The marriage is listed just over halfway through the book so as a guess it was likely the marriage was in June /July time.

Regards
Steve

Hello Steve and Anne,

That's brilliant - thank you so much for your help!

Anne, I'm guessing that the fathers of the bride and groom aren't shown on the marriage entry, but if they are shown, I'd really like to know their names, please.

Thanks again,
Donna.

Hello Donna

I have sent you an image of the marriage entry.

Thank you for your trouble, Anne.

On the up side, at least I know Ann's maiden name now!

Kind regards,
Donna

Just to add, the witnesses Hudson and Kirk were what I think of as 'the usual suspects' - officials of the church who witnessed many marriages.

Thanks very much, Hugh - I was wondering who they were.

Anne, I replied to your email but my reply bounced. I was thanking you for the useful tip you sent me with regard to the GRO indexes, and I just wanted to let you know that I have now traced Ann Jackson's baptism, and her parents' marriage, both at St Nicholas, Bradfield. I'm very pleased about that.

Many thanks again to everyone.
