Leeds Research

I am currently trying to help my husband with his tree and need to access records for St Peter Leeds which I think is now Leeds Cathedral. The time period I need to cover is from 1840 back especial material that will show occupations.

William Pickard we believe was born in Leeds in 1811. He became a Woolcomber.
There are so many Williams that I am coming up against a brick wall. The IGI (Family Search) seems to have information but does not show occupations. I can not find on line where a CD could be purchased for the Church. I have checked Genfair & Yorkshire Archeological Society. I dont believe they have a Family History Society.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks Elaine.

Re: Leeds Research

Hi there Elaine,
The following link are the people who are custodians of St Peters, the Parish Church of Leeds.

leeds@wyjs.org.uk

Send them an email asking your question and they should be able to help you with reference numbers.

After you know that I only live 3 miles away from them and could pop along and have a look at it for you.

Cheers Roger.

Re: Leeds Research

Thanks Barry will try that.

Re: Leeds Research

The parish records for St Peter Leeds are on Ancestry. There is a baptism of a William Pickard at this church on the 2nd Feb 1912 and it gives a date of birth as 4th Dec 1911. Only gives father's name which was also . William. Says abode Woodhouse.

Regards
Claire

Re: Leeds Research

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your reply and I will follow through with it.

The info I have so far I have taken from the IGI. (Family Search)

Name William Pickard
Gender Male
Christening Date 02 Feb 1812
Christening Date (Original) 02 FEB 1812
Christening Place SAINT PETER,LEEDS,YORK,ENGLAND
Birth Date 04 Dec 1811
Father's Name William Pickard

I was hoping to have something with the fathers occupation on it so I could follow them back. Tims line stem from this chap all being born in Leeds with a short stay in Bradford.
They later moved to Clifford/Boston Spa. That I have sorted out. Its from William 1811 back that is causing the problem.

Thanks for your very very kind offer of a look up I just might need that. Its because of this issue that we have left them alone as finding material is very much harder than in Sheffield.

Thanks again.

Re: Leeds Research

oops those dates I put on my post should have read 1812 & 1811

Re: Leeds Research

Hi Claire,

Thanks for that info I had missed it yesterday.

I dont know Leeds very well but apparently Woodhouse is just north of the city center.
I notice from Ancestry that it does not mention fathers occupation so obtaining a cd of the parish church wouldn't help. Maybe the abode will help thanks again.

Re: Leeds Research

Hi Elaine

The Historical Directories website (University of Leicester) has a number of Leeds directories.
The 1834 directory shows a Pickard Wm, Woolsorter, Woodhouse Carr. There are a number of Pickards in the various directories including some others from Woodhouse.

Philip

Re: Leeds Research

Thanks Phil,

We will certainly check it out.

Fits in with his 1834 marriage and then the birth of a child Hannah in 1835.

Regards.
