Re: Marriage

Hi Susan, Jan et al,

It is possible, that the Ann Price listed as a possible wife for Frederick Packard in 1864, (alternate listed Mavis Travis) are one and the same person as Ann Elizabeth and Elizabeth Price. As Moira pointed out, sometimes she was listed on the census as just Elizabeth Price.

Also pointed out earlier in this thread, on the 1871 census for Brightside Bierlow, Elizabeth Price, now 26, is visiting her brother Joseph, who is an Innkeeper/Grocer renting out rooms to boarders. One of those boarders was William Lowe age 25, SINGLE from Shropshire. Elizabeth is listed as MARRIED with no husband in sight.

Also on the 1871 census for Sheffield, is Frederick Packard age 28, listed as MARRIED, living with his widowed mother, sister and brother in law, but no wife in sight.
In the 1800's, a woman reverting back to her maiden name when the marriage has for whatever reason, not worked out, was not unknown, it happened in my family tree.
What puzzles me is why the Lowe/Price marriage in 1871 took place in HULL..?? and why William Lowe is listed in the marriage record as George William Lowe since this seems to be the only occasion this name is used..?

Re: Marriage

I also saw the 1871 census records for Frederick living with his mother and for Elizabeth living with her brother - my thought was exactly the same she had moved out. If the death of Frederick Packard is correct 1873 then perhaps she married Mr Lowe 1871 in Hull to avoid gossip. Purchasing some certificates could help to clear up the mystery.

Re: Marriage

If the death of Frederick Packard was 1873 and she married Lowe in Hull in 1871 then she was trying to avoid being caught and gaoled for a clear case of bigamy.

Re: Marriage

There is a marriage notice in the local paper giving the date of the Packard/Price marriage and location as being Trinity which would fit with being Holy Trinity, Wicker and it being the same Ann Elizabeth. I will take a look at the archives today and find out the full details of the marriage.

Re: Marriage

Hi Jan/Claire,

We transcribed Holy Trinity Wicker back in 2009. The marriage is not listed.
Go to the Parish Records page and at the top you will see where it says "Marriages"
just click on that and then enter the name of one of the couple.

Errors are made and could have been hard to read so therefor not in our database.

From FreeBMD.

Re: Marriage

Hi Jan & Everyone

I've looked at the Holy Trinity, Wicker marriages and i've found the marriage. It looks to be the same lady!

22nd August 1864. Marriage by Banns. Vicar John Aldous.

Frederick Packard aged 21, Bachelor, Grinder of The Wicker, father William Packer, Game Keeper. Married Ann Price aged 20, Spinster of The Wicker, father Joseph Price, Silversmith.

Witnesses were Joseph Greenway & Mary Brocklehurst. Frederick signed his name, Ann gave her mark.

Hope this helps
Claire

Re: Marriage

Hi Jan/Claire,

Vicki just pointed out to me we had only transcribed the baptisms from Holy Trinity.
Sorry about the earlier message but the marriages will go on our to do list for down the road.

Glad you were able to find it Claire.

Re: Marriage

I have a feeling, but could be wrong, that Ann Elizabeth and Elizabeth are TWO seperate people who both happen to just have Joseph as a father and the two Joseph's are different people. Yes ther could be a connection and I think it is possible that the connection is the grandparents of Joseph ie Grandparents had two sons who then both married and called thier child Joseph ie could the grandfather have been called Joseph. Hope you get my drift.
