Hi can anyone help with my gtgt grandad John Cockayne Mate born 1887 Bolsterstone.
I have found court papers for july 1913 where John has attacked a woman named Sarah Jane Dickenson in april 1913 at deepcar and was sentenced to 12 month hard laboure I am trying to find out more informtion about the attack, what happened, what prison, his address where he lived, anything. I have been to the libery and looked through the news papers on microfinch hoping to find something but with no luck it seems not to have been reported in the papers. Is there anywhere I can get more information about the attack, or prison recoreds.
John is on 1861 census I cant find him again till 1911 census. court papers 1913, then again when he marries in 1924 besides that he is elusive.
I am woundering if he went to war as he would of been released for prison about that time, or was he missing because he was back in prison for something else? so any information on him or where to look for it would be greatly appreciated..
In the 1901 census he is living with his stepfather, William Hellewell, and his mother, Ruth, in Stocksbridge.
In 1939 Register he is living with his wife, Edith, and four children at 3 Maltravers Place, Sheffield; his occupation is general labourer.
He died in Sheffield in 1975
I can only find a very brief mention of his crime in a July 1913 edition of the Sheffield Telegraph; I will keep looking.
Sheff daily telegraph 5th July 1913 carries a report (FMP ). He had been ill and could not get work. Sarah Jane Dickenson was an aged widow. I cannot see the full article.
A search of the ww1 medal cards shows that the name John Mate appears only 3 times. One of these is John w mate and the other 2 just John Mate. Of these latter 2 , one was in N staffs regiment and the other in Army Service Corps.
That's the article I found. The bit about being ill refers to the case before. The report is on cases and sentences, each case only seems to warrant the tiniest paragraph. The paragraph on John Mate is as follows:-
John Cockayne Mate (25), labourer, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour for a grave assault upon an aged widow named Sarah Jane Dickenson at Stocksbridge
He is listed in the Wakefield prison register.
Conviction for 'Indt'? assault. 2 previous convictions.
5 feet tall brown hair
granted about 6 weeks remission
I will send you a copy of the page.
From the Wakefield Calendar of prisoners:
"Unlawfully assaulting Sarah Jane Dickinson
with intent violently and against her will,
to ravish and carnally know her, at Deepcar,
on 26th April 1913."
He had been bailed on committal.
Previous convictions: "Twice fined, assault, &c."
Warrant (?committal) 2 May
In 1911 he is living as stepson in Bolsterstone with the Helliwell family

Aged widow! The court paper bit I have just says her name and deepcar I just presumed she was a young woman, poor lady, I wounder how old she was? and where he attaced her. I dont think he was a very nice person.
Thanks to you everyone for your hard work.
Very interesting thankyou hugh for the prison information this is just what i was looking for. What does 'Indt'? assault stand for?
It look like he made a habbit of assaulting people. Does anyone know where I can look for these other crimes he commited, if he was fined surely there must be a record of it somewhere.
thanks Sue for the 1911 census
Have you sent the page from the prison records? nothing has come through yet.
You were wondering how old the 'aged' Sarah Jane Dickinson was. She's 51 in the 1911 census; early 50s is not what we'd call aged today.
