Sellers and Cartledge family

I am looking for information on Joseph Sellers and Mary Jane Cartledge, they lived in Sheffield, Joseph was a spring cutler and a foreman at Joseph Rogers, he died in 1908 from diabetes, I have been told that he was a gifted athlete and won a lot of trophies, does anyone have any information of Joseph and his parents John and Elizabeth, I think they lived at Harvey Clough Road for a while, and also Marshall Rd Sheffield. Mary Jane was the daughter of Uriah, I have been unable to find a birth certificate for Joseph. Does anyone have any ideas how I can find information about Joseph and Mary Jane, Joseph was born in 1862 and died in 1908. Were there local papers around the Wortley, Bradfield and Sheffield areas and how could I search them as I am in Australia. Some ideas on how to go forward from here would be appreciated. I am on Ancestry.

Re: Sellers and Cartledge family

Hello Helen,

Dunno if you know this,,,

Joe Sellers and Mary Jane Cartledge married on July 1st 1888 in Sheffield St Pauls Norton Lees,
A spinster aged 23 and Bachelor aged 26,grooms father was John Sellers, brides father was Uriah Cartledge.

Joe Sellers may have been born in Wakefield Union 1862, mothers maiden name is Whiteman GRO 9C 33. Wakefield Union was a workhouse.

I don't find his death in 1908 at the GRO.

Regards

Terry

Re: Sellers and Cartledge family

I *think* Joe's parents married in 1865 in Bradfield (Elizabeth's maiden name was HAYWOOD). John SELLERS may not be his father.

This looks the most likely birth:
HAYWOOD, JOE (no mother's maiden name listed)
GRO Reference: 1861 Sep Quarter in WORTLEY AND PENISTONE Volume 09C Page 187

Re: Sellers and Cartledge family

A few weeks after Joe died there was a benefit concert in Woodseats for Mary Jane and her 5 children. A newspaper report describes Joe as "an old-time cricketer and footballer" and says that he used to play for Lockwood Brothers.

Incidentally, John SELLARS, cutler, of Wadsley was fined twice in the 1860s for poaching.
