Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

I am seeking any ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family whose parents were Thomas William Davies and Jane Tong.
Specifically the following members of that family;
Lois Davies B 1903 at Birchinlee Village
Richard Davies B 1905 at Birchinlee Village
Albert Edward Davies B 1910 at Birchinlee Village
Arthur Davies B 1912
Ernest William Davies B 1914
Herbert J Davies B 1918
Ronald Davies B 1921

One other member of that family George James Davies B 1906 is my Grandfather.

I would like to find out more about my Grandfathers brothers and sister from anyone who might be related to them.

Thanks

Elaine,

Birchinlee was a construction company “tin town” in the Derwent Valley alongside Derwent Reservoir.

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

Thanks Nigel, I dont think it was around for very long.

If I have the correct family her grandfather was born in London in 1906.
Always helpful to have the 1911 census info as well. I am having difficulty finding them.

If they were in the Sheffield area helps people pin point them later in their lives.

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

I have the 1911 Census information. Finding out what happened to the family once the village of Birchinlee was closed down is what I am interested in. I have information about George James born 1906 in Birchinlee but it's the rest of the family I am looking for.

I also know that they went to Stocksbridge but that is effectively where my research ends.

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

Hi Elaine,

Birchinlee no longer exists,

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

I should clarify.

I am a he not a she.

I have plenty of information about my Grandfather George James. He was born in the village of Birchinlee in 1906. It's the rest of the family I am looking for and any ancestors from them.

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

Hi Sue,
Thanks for that another little piece to the jigsaw.
It was a good sized family, typical for the time I guess, so there must be some ancestors still around Stocksbridge hopefully.

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

Leslie, you should clarify whether you are searching for ancestors or descendants. If the latter then it looks like Thomas William died in Wortley (which included Stocksbridge) in the late 1940s so you should seek marriages for the various children in Wortley in the period 1920 to 1974 Free BMD is good for that. Because Davies is a common name there probably will be more than one possibility for each. Then you either have to hope the marriages show up in the parish (on FMP). If not then you will have to buy a few certificates to find the right ones with father Thomas William. Then. You will have the same problem, but bigger, with the next generation, so it could be an expensive exercise. It looks as if Jane may have lived to a ripe old age and possibly died in Rotherham age 91. Does that mean one of her children lived in Rotherham?
On this site we try to avoid identifying living descendants because we need to respect their right to privacy. Of course there is nothing to stop you from asking living relatives to contact you but we should not try to identify them for you. You could also try looking at public trees for people who have the same ancestors as you, that is Thomas William and Jane. You could then contact the tree owners.
Hope that helps
Dave

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

Thank you Dave T,

Descendants, Descendants, Descendants

Jane Davies nee Tong died in 1961. At the time she was living on Ridal Avenue, Stocksbridge. She may well have been in the hospital at Rotherham when she passed away (not that far away) I understand the issue around the privacy of living descendants. I was using this forum on the slim chance that one of them may read my message.

You mentioned 'public trees' and 'tree owners'. Are these in places like Ancestry.com or elsewhere?

Thanks Dave

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

Leslie, there are trees on Ancestry, and GenesReunited. I think also on Familysearch and maybe FMP. No doubt someone will correct me and maybe add to the list.

Re: Seeking Ancestors of the Davis or Davies Family Circa 1903-1921

Hi Les
I think I have tracked Louisa born 28 /12/1902
The 1911 census suggest she was born at Birchinlee, but looking on the GRO index I think this is her birth registration.

DAVIES, LOUISA JANE TONG
GRO Reference: 1903 M Quarter in KING'S NORTON Volume 06C Page 406

I searched for marriages

On the 1939 register, living at Manchester Road, Stockbridge
Hugh Kelly 16 Nov 1900 Boiler Smiths Labourer Steel Works
Louie Kelly 28 Dec 1902 Unpaid Domestic Duties

I could not find any suitable births of children for this couple.

Possible death
KELLY Louisa J 48 Staincross Mar 1951 2d 749

Hope this helps
