Moira found for me the 1939 census for the Chatterton Family.
Frederick Chatterton (Son) born 29 May 1917
Free BMD the birth is 1917
LDS record is 1917
Ancestry the death is 1970 birth 29 May 1918
Is it 1917 or 1918 for birth
I am starting to find variations on Ancestry for dates
another family member Ernest Chatterton married to my cousin died in 2011 (confirmed)
Ernest as far as the family know was born in 1925
and yet on Ancestry it Has Ernest birth 1923 died in 2001
Possibly 2 Ernest Chattertons??

I feel that the GRO birth index (ie FreeBMD births) and the 1939 Register are likely to be more reliable than the dob listed in the death register. The latter is probably based on the memory of the family and may be wrong. I doubt that they are finding and showing birth certificates to the registrar.
