I am trying to pin down a Sheffield man, John Denton, probably born 1818 but could be a year or two earlier. He emigrated to the US in 1842 along with a Samuel Denton, 40 - neither of whom I have managed to pin down in the UK or US.
On the ship's passenger list (Liverpool - NY) they are both identified as "Labourer". But later in the US, John represents himself as a "gunsmith". Which may or may not be true.
I'm trying to pin this pair down and I can only find a handful of John Dentons in the 1841 Census, and only maybe two of them I am not sure whether they are still around in 1851. Most of them I find alive and well and in England in 1851. My man died in America in 1847. Samuel I can't seem to find, before he emigrates, at all.

Thanks, Moira
I have found about half a dozen in 1841 and most of them again in 1851. One appears to be in the 95th Regiment, and based in Hampshire but I can't be sure which of the Johns he is.
