Was his father Frederick Arthur Norton?
They lived at London Road on the 1911 census?

I think there were two boys called ALBERT born about the same time but it looks as though one was killed in France. We have to tread lightly so not to confuse them. Did he have a middle name?

As you obtained the info from FindMyPast I would have thought his army number would be there?
I have Ancestry and can not see anything as you have noted.

The Albert referred to survived the war - he is down on the 1939 census living on 51 Tillotson Road.

Yes, my Albert just had the one forename and, his parents were Frederick Arthur and Ada living on London Road.
Sue, he did live at 51 Tillotson Road in 1939.
My Ancestry has expired but, I couldn't find any service details for him, I posted the detail which someone had sent to me from Find My Past which didn't show a service number which is what I'd really like.

I can't seem to find the records on ancestry or find my past!!

Hi Sue,
When I had my Ancestry subs until last month I could never find it. This recent one has been sent to me from a "forces" site who found the information on Find My Past which prompted me to ask on here if anyone had a subscription.The information concurs with what my mum who's now 91 knew of her father's army life albeit brief because of his youth.

I tried to view the medal rolls without success, says I need to subscribe. I've had an Ancestry subscription since 2003 but, I let it lapse recently due to house move taking over spare time. Just looking at Albert Norton's military information whilst I have time.

Marlene, I have not had an ancestry subscription for years and I have been doing complex searches all this week on the medal rolls in Ancestry. It clearly states that they are free. You need to go to Ancestry, bring down the search menu, select Military then on the right hand side select the file that says MEDAL ROLLS FREE. Once you are in that you can do everything.

FMP has 2 possibilities:

Alfred Norton S/N: 11063
A Norton S/N: 3/5054

Both are shown as being privates in the Yorkshire Light Infantry.

Nothing came up for the Dukes nor the West Riding Regiment.

Both of these A. Norton 3/5054 and Alfred Norton 11063 are on ancestry - both have joining dates well before 1918 so I don't think either are your Alfred.

Yes Sue, That's what I found on Ancestry.
The information I was given via Find My Past could lead me to my Albert but, there's no service number on it which is all I need really.

Marlene, take a look at researchingww1.co.uk. There is a clear statement there about the Victory Medal. It says:
"The Victory medal was awarded to all servicemen and women who served in a theatre of war between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918 and automatically qualified its recipient for the British War Medal. The Victory medal was never awarded on its own.
Soldiers continued to be eligible for the medal post Armistice if they served in Trans-Capia (modern day Turkmenistan) and Northern Russia in 1919."

If the info you have about your grandfather is correct, this means that he did not qualify for the medal, so there cannot be a medal card for him.
