I am in the USA and I am totally stumped about this. I am researching my family in England. Both sides of my family come from there. I found many many names and places of burials. Most just list a location but some list the name of the Parish. Just the one I am looking at now lists Ridgeway Parish, Derbyshire, England as the place of burial. Can someone explain it from that one Parish to me? How do I find out where they are buried? I mean, does that leave me just as clueless as I was before I found that she is buried in Ridgeway Parish? Hope someone can enlighten me on this. I do understand what Parishes are, but I am stuck after that.
Hi
My basic explanation-
A parish is the area covered by the local church(or parish church). Most areas of England are divided into parishes with a parish church and priest/vicar responsible for it. A person buried in a parish is probably be buried in the churchyard rather than a municipal cemetery so you need to look up the relevant parish church registers for a record.
Hope this makes sense!
