Hi, I am looking into my sister in law's ancestry at the moment and am trying to find more about Edward Darby, born 1889 in Sheffield. I am unable to find any further information on him - census records, marriage, death etc.
Edward's son is also called Edward Darby (my sister in law's father) born 1920 in Sheffield.
My sister in law is wondering if there is any connection to the Darby Iron Bridge.
I think I have found the family on the 1939 register.
6/3 Forncett Street, Sheffield.
Edward Darby gives his date of birth as 17 March 1889.
He is with wife Annie and children Albert, Edward (1920), and Jessy. Three records are closed.
There is a marriage in quarter 2, 1918 in Sheffield for an Edward Darby
to Annie Barker.
I can not find Edward anywhere in Sheffield prior to the marriage in 1918.
(Using 1889 as a date of birth).
Also, searching FreeBMD, there is no birth registration in 1889
for Edward Darby.
It might be worth while ordering the marriage certificate, and then
hopefully you will have the name of Edward's father.
20 April 1918
Edward DARBY aged 25 a Bachelor.
Occupation: Puddler
Address 10 Harleston Street.
Father: Abraham DARBY a Puddler.
Annie BARKER aged 18 a Spinster.
Address: 16 Harleston Street
Father: Peter Barker a Bricklayer.
Witnesses John and Alice BARKER
I have feeling that his year of birth is 4 years out. There is a death registered in Sheffield for an Edward DARBY aged 63, giving year of birth as 1885. Looking at the census there is an Edward with a father Abraham and mother Phoebe, his father's occupation is given as Iron worker (Puddler) everything fits apart from the 1889 birth date.
Thanks to Angela finding the marriage, I have found the family on
the 1911 census.
12 Mountain Street, Attercliffe, Sheffield.
Abraham Darby, 46yrs, Puddler, born Tipton, Staffordshire.
(married 26yrs, 8 children born alive, 5 still living).
Phoebe Darby, 46yrs, born Hanley, Staffordshire.
Edward Darby, son, 26yrs (1885), Puddler, born Bug....., Staffordshire.
The other children are William 16, Thomas 11, Amy Elizabeth 8 and
John Thomas 5. All born Carbrook, Yks.
In 1901 they are at 95 Copster Road, Attercliffe, Sheffield.
Edward Darby, born 24 February 1885, baptised 5 January 1890 at
Carbrook, Sheffield. Parents, Abraham and Phoebe, 6 Staple' Houses,
Bright Street, furnaceman.
I agree with Dave, trying to make himself out to be younger to
Annie's family.
In 1891 they are at 2 Carbrook Place. Transcribed as DARNLEY on FMP but clearly DARBY
Darby Abram head M 28 furnaceman at iron works STS Bilston
Darby Pheobe wife M 25 STS Hanley
Darby Edward son 6 scholar YKS Woodhouse
Darby Maria dau 3 YKS Woodhouse
Darby Charlotte dau 1 YKS Sheffield
There's also number of baptisms for this family on FMP
Thank you all for your replies, most helpful. I found Edward Darby on the 1939 register and was going on his date of birth being 1889, nothing was coming up in FMP and Ancestry, now more things are coming up with his date of birth as 1885.
The 1911 census is confusing stating that he came from Staffordshire and his other records state that he was from Sheffield.
