Re: William Woodhouse Family around 1700's

Barry,

William is my 6x great grandfather.

To check his baptism out you need to look at Family Search.
Drop the e in Woodhouse and look in Derbyshire.

For Sheffield marriages you need the CD of early Marriages from S&DFHS or what we have transcribed and are in our database.

Re: William Woodhouse Family around 1700's

Hi Barry,

William Woodhouse of Totley, baptised 8 November 1699, at Dronfield, Dby.
Father: Ralph.

As you know, Totley is now a suburb of Sheffield, but originally came
under Derbyshire and was in the parish of Dronfield.

I have a copy will for Ralph Woodhouse who died in 1704 and was buried
at Dronfield. Ralph also had lands and tenements at Dore. Provision
was made for his children as some were still quite young when he died.

I have no proof that this is the right William, but sometime soon I
am hoping to get to Sheffield Archives to see if I can find any connection.
This William had at least six siblings.

Moira.

Re: William Woodhouse Family around 1700's

Elaine if William is your 6x Great Grandfather, Who do you have for his father. According to Moira, William's father was Ralph which is different to the parents Joseph & Maria Denton that I have???

Re: William Woodhouse Family around 1700's

William is definitely my 6x great grandfather.

My mother was a Woodhouse........

You have also found like myself when I come to his father it comes to a big question mark. BUT we have based it on where the family lived/farmed for many generations.

Like Moira I also have Ralph but in the past had looked at Joseph & Maria.

What is your source for Joseph???

Re: William Woodhouse Family around 1700's

Hi I also believe it to be Ralf Dave W (guess what the W stands for)

Re: William Woodhouse Family around 1700's

Elaine, When it comes to these ages I sometimes base it on other peoples sources. This is not a good practice, but I wait until records start to appear, which sometimes take a few years.
I have to reflect on the Dorset records where I originally came from, These records go back sometimes into the 1500's and it makes it a lot easier.
I just wish more Yorkshire, Derbyshire records were on line.
I am pleased with the material from the indexes which have been more than helpful.

Re: William Woodhouse Family around 1700's

Barry,

When I started my research 1998 there was very little on line especially for Yorkshire and Sheffield in particular.

I was lucky to be taught by a chap (LDS) from Dorset who was involved with the transcribing of material for that county and where it was to go on line. That gave me the idea for Sheffield Indexers.

Ancestry was still very much in its infancy, very little info for anything north of London and FindMyPast wasn't a twinkle in anyones eye at that time. When researching you have two choices pay for a subscription or trawl the internet and see what you can pick up for free.

When you get back to the dates we are in you really need the information from the Parish Church (Cathedral) or Dronfield Parish church (Dbyshire), because you have to rule in or out the Sheffield Woodhouses or in our case the Dronfield ones.

Can you briefly give me your direct line back to Ralph/Joseph please so I can see how you connect for my one name study please.
