sometime ago someone posted how to get onto gro site which showed mothers maiden names without ordering a certificate. I have been trying and cannot seem to find the correct site can anyone help me please?

Go to this link and register
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Once you have logged in go for the 1st option, which is "Search the GRO Indexes"
This takes you to "Search the GRO online index" You can then select either birth OR death. This will forward you to a search screen for whichever index you wish to search. The deaths now have the age in the index from 1837-1865

Angela, was that a typo? The age at death is available to 1965, not 1865!

In the original GRO indexes no age at death is given between 1837-1865. It was introduced in 1866.
