Re: Alfred William Gascoigne, buried at St. Mary's in Sheffield - request help finding!

Hi Sandra,

Sheffield Parish Church (Cathedral).
Alfred William Gascoigne, born 18 Oct 1807, baptised 13 Nov 1807,
parents, Jona'n and Mary, cutler.

John Thomas, born 20 Mar 1823, bap 21 May 1823.
Mary Ann, born 28 Mar 1814, bap 10 Apr 1814.
Maria, born 7 June 1818, bap 28 June 1818.
The parents of these are also Jonathan and Mary, cutler.
No bap found for Thomas so far. The 1841 census says not born in county.

When Alfred was buried, his address is given as 'Bride' Street.
I think this might be a mistake in transcription, and should
be Bright Street. It is under Gaskin.

In the left hand column under apprentices there is a possible one
for Jonathan, but, it is under Gaskin.

Jonathan Gaskin, bap 21 March 1783/4, Killamarsh, father Thos. Gaskin.

Moira.

Hi Sandy,

Something a little odd but I think its your chap.

The baptism was at Sheffield Parish Church now Sheffield Cathedral (C of E)

Though the index states Alfred William Gascoigne when you actually look at the transcription it only says Alfred.

He was born 18th Oct 1807 and baptised the 13th Nov 1807. Parents Jonathan & Mary Gascoigne a cutler.

It will be shown on FindMyPast but I only have Ancestry.

Hope this gets you started.

Moira,

Thank you so very much. If Bride Street is indeed a typo, this is indeed my chap!

Is there any more information about Alfred's death, such as cause or where he was buried? If we could confirm St. Mary's then I know as well.

And just to confirm, Alfred's burial refers to him as Gaskin, as does his father Johnathan born in 1783/84 in Killamarsh...? This would tend to link them as well...

Lastly, I assume Killamarsh is the town just 20 minutes or so outside of Sheffield? I would like to visit.

Thanks again!

And thank you Elaine! Your info corroborates the other. Best to you!

Sandra, a couple of observations:
1. The apprentice record Moira referred to indicates that Jonathon did not purchase his freedom at the end of his apprenticeship. One common reason for that would be that he just continued working for his master.
2. Do you only have Thomas in the 1841 census? If so do not necessarily assume he was a son of Jonathon and Mary. Could he have been the Thomas who died age 76 in 1883 in Sheffield, who was born in Kegworth, Notts accordung to the 1881 census?

Re: Alfred William Gascoigne, buried at St. Mary's in Sheffield - request help finding!

Thanks, Dave. I have no idea how apprentices worked then or about buying freedom, so that is interesting. Buying freedom was done if one no longer wished to work in the trade? Any idea what that cost?

I only have Thomas in the 1841 census (not sure about the 1851 census) but he is listed there as a member of the household at Bright Street, Sheffield, along with Johnathan and Mary.

I have no reason to believe that he is not the Thomas who died age 76 in 1883 in Sheffield, who was born in Kegworth, Notts accordung to the 1881 census! Is there a way to trace him to the family any other way for more certainty?

Thanks again.

Re: Alfred William Gascoigne, buried at St. Mary's in Sheffield - request help finding!

Sandy,
Gaining freedom was buying a personal trade mark from the Company of Cutlers. Basically he had finished his apprenticeship and was striking out on his own. Some simply decided not to do that and just carry on working as an employee. It looks like Jonathon did that because the record does not indicate that he became a freeman.
The cost will be easy to find by Google.
My comment about the 1841 census was that there is no indication of relationship in that census. If he was born out of county he may have been a nephew for instance. That may explain why his baptism has not turned up. The best way to check would be to find him in other censuses, which will give his place of birth.
