Re: Help wanted burial site

Hi, thankyou so much for helping.
Charlotte is originally from Branston in Lincolnshire and was married to her first husband there. The parish church is Church of England.
Her second husband who she was with at time of death was called John Vessey and he died in 1955 in Sheffield area also. I don't know where he is buried either. Her first husband died and was buried in Devon. So that may possibly be a slim chance of her being there with him as they had children together but were only married for a few years before he died. She lived at 54 Cottam Street in the High Green area of Sheffield. I've requested the marriage certificate for Charlotte and John to see if it's a church that may give me another place to try. John was born in Hackthorne in Lincolnshire but I can't find exact info on his parents as his name is quite common there. I will try again with that line though. I've checked branston as it was charlottes place of birth but no luck.

Re: Help wanted burial site

Hi Wayne,

On the 1939 Register, John Vessey gives his date of birth as 18 May 1869.
(Charlotte's is 3 March 1860).

1871 census - Welton, Lincs. (Welton is just down the road from Hackthorne).
John Vessey, head, mar,50yrs, Ag Lab, born Hundleby, Lincs.
Eliza Vessey, wife, 39yrs, born Newark, Notts.
Rebecca Vessey, dau, 12yrs, born Stamfield, Lincs.
Hannah Vessey, dau, 10yrs, born Newbald, Lincs.
George, Vessey, son, 3yrs, born Barlings, Lincs.
JOHN Vessey, son, 1yr, born Hackthorne, Lincs.

Hoping this tallies with the marriage certificate when you receive it.

Moira.

Re: Help wanted burial site

Hi Wayne,
I have found a death registered for a Charlotte Vessey aged 81 years, dying in Sheffield in 1942, it gives her birth year of 1861 which roughly fits with the 1939 Register. The death is registered in Sheffield so I would think she would have been buried in Sheffield, perhaps if you contact the City Road Cemetery office they would perhaps be able to tell you where she is buried, she died the 1st qtr of 1942 Sheffield vol.9c p.634

Re: Help wanted burial site

Thanks for both of your help. I will ring tomorrow and post on here how I get on.

Re: Help wanted burial site

Hi Wayne,

We (Sheffield Indexers) have transcribed City Road Burials and they are in our Database. We have completed 1881 to 1966.

Charlotte does not show there.

I have I believe all the CDs from Sheffield & District Family History Society and not many of those go to the year 1942. I have checked those and she is not showing there either.

John is listed on the 1911 census as a Traction Engine Driver and they were in Asbourne in Derbyshire. It doesn't look as if this marriage had any children. Though they do have a nephew living with them in 1911. He was a Spalding and I think a nephew of Charlottes as he was born in Branston the same place where Charlotte was from.

Maybe the death cert would indicate where she was living that might help.

Regards.

Re: Help wanted burial site

Thanks again Elaine. As far as I know Charlotte was living at 54 cottam road high green when she died. Should I ring the city road office or do they have the same records as you
Thanks for all your help

Re: Help wanted burial site

Morning,

What we have transcribed is what City Road have..but.....it might be helpful to look at different spellings in our database. That you can do yourself.

Elaine in Ottawa.

PS. I have just looked at my 1968 Street Directory and there is NO Cottam Road but there is a Cottam Street which is just off Penistone Road. I have just checked on a current map and there is indeed a Cottam Rd at High Green. Does that indicate its a new street?

I think that the reason we are not turning her up is she is probably buried in a churchyard i.e. Ecclesfield or Chapeltown etc. As I mentioned before when S&DFHS completed their project for the NBI (Churchyards) they did not go as far as 1942.

Hope this helps.

Re: Help wanted burial site

Cause of death included senility. Would there be a nearby hospital that she may have been in that posssibly bury all their deceased patients in a cemetery near that hospital? I found this with another reative. I will search the database now

Re: Help wanted burial site

Hi again,

Yes Middlewood Hospital they used Wadsley Parish Church. We have a map under our burials top of page with the area marked out. There again we run into the date problem.

Wadsley Church, Sheffield - 1848, 1906, 1909 to 1910

Those dates look odd...... Can you check with S&DFHS and see if their transcription covers more.

Re: Help wanted burial site

It does say cottam street as Charlotte's address where she was living. I assumed it meant cottam road as I know high green and know there is no cottam street so thought it was a error. As for the register I searched for all Charlotte's 1300 of them but only 3 starting with v and they were Vernon so not her. 63 Vesseys but not her so I will send for the death certificate and see from there.
Thanks for all your help
