The NBI was put together about 10 years ago by the Federation of Family History Societies of which most Societies are members.

All the Sheffield burials were submitted but the organisers at the federation stripped out the useful information such as address and relationships. All the transcriptions are on FMP and our submissions are on our burial disc, which is a full transcription of the details in the burial registers.

The burial entry at Handsworth in 1807, says that John was of
'Newfield Green'.

I was also surprised re Newfield Green.
In the same year, there was also a burial of a Charles Stevenson of
Newfield Green.
Looking at the next couple of pages of burials, it is quite amazing
how many people from the Sheffield area were buried at Handsworth.
Attercliffe, Sheffield Park and a lot from Gleadless are some of them.

Roger, I have tried a different tack on this. If you look at the Apprentices and Freemen to the left there are several John Stevensons who must have been born between 1760 and 1770. In three cases the father's home is identified. They are Chesterfield, Notts and Owlerton. This would imply that perhaps when you are looking for a birth for him you may need to look further afield than Sheffield.

Roger, the only scissorsmith that looks to fit was John Stephenson son of Matthew, a tailor. He became apprentice in 1776 for 7 years. He purchased his freedom in 1790. The implication is he was born about 1762.

Gleadless was in the parish of Handsworth.

"GLEADLESS, a hamlet and constablewick in the parish of Handsworth, wapentake of South Strafford, West Riding of county York, 3 miles S.E. of Sheffield. The people are mostly employed in the manufacture of table cutlery, and in the coal-pits. There is a chapel-of-ease the living of which is a curacy annexed to the rectory of Handworth. The Independents have a chapel, and there is a National school."

Christ Church, Hollinsend Road, Gleadless was built in 1839 as a chapel of ease to St Mary, Handsworth and consecrated in 1843. The parish was created in 1881 from St Mary, Handsworth.
