HI, does anybody know if somebody died in the asylum in 1907 was there a separate section in the cemetery for them to buried.

Hi Fin,

Wadsley Parish Church had a separate section for Middlewood Hospital patient.

If you check out our pages of different cemeteries (burial records & then to the top of the page) you will see Wadsley.

If someone died in the asylum there would be an autopsy. The next of kin would be informed and they could arrange burial wherever they wanted. If the next of kin did not want to do that, or if there was no known next of kin, then they would be buried locally, ie Wadsley if it was SYA. This procedure even worked like that when SYA was turned into a war hospital during WW1. In 1915 the female patients were transferred to Storthes Hall Asylum in Huddersfield. My grandmother died there in 1917 but after autopsy (a legal requirement in an asylum) her body was transferred back to Sheffield Union and released to her mother, who buried her in the family plot at Underbank, Stannington. The burial record simply says "transferred from Sheffield" with no mention of Storthes Hall.

Hi, dave/Elaine I have the burial in the general cemetery but he is not in the family plot although he had next of kin and was wondering why.
