Re: Query re GRO Index.

Hi Muriel,

Go to the GRO site. and first register with them.

If you are already registered then its the same process as when ordering certificates.

Put in what you know about the person leaving the mothers name blank.

When you do the search that will appear.
No charge of course.

Re: Query re GRO Index.

The page to start from is...

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content

Click on 'Order Certificates Online'

Click on 'Register/ Login" in right hand menu

If you have not registered, there is a link for 'Register as an individual', below the log in details.

Once you have registerd and logged in the first option is 'Search the GRO Indexes' which is the one you want.

Two things to note:

The births search engine requires you to enter a gender (why?)

They also require a date, with a leeway of +/-2 years.

So to search for unknown births over a longer period, say a decade, you would need to do four searches, 2 for each five year period (to find both boys and girls).

Re: Query re GRO Index.

Hi Elaine and Hugh
Thanks for the information I have now sussed it but I still cannot find the lady I am looking for I have tried all her siblings also but no joy in finding a common surname for their mother, oh well I guess I will have to leave it another 2 years and see what turns up.

Re: Query re GRO Index.

I love this new addition to the GRO, as is said it can certainly progress things.

Re: Query re GRO Index.

when was your Sarah Taylor supposedly born and when did she marry and to whom lets see if us indexers can help you solve this.

Re: Query re GRO Index.

Hi John
T
The first time she appeared was on 1891 census and said she was 7 years old.
She married on10/03/1902 to charles Nixon at Darnall church stating she was 19.
I am in touch with her granddaughter who tells me that Charles was always ac
cused of being a babysnatcher because Sarah was so much younger than he was.
On1881 census the family lived at Burns Terrace, Tinsley. David her older brother is shown on this site as attending Brightside school, but there are 2 different dates of birth for him so I guess they weren't very good with ages and dates of birth. on the 1881 census there are siblings;
Bessie Ann age12 born Normanton
Mary age 1 " Rotherham
Annie age7 " "
David age4 " "
John George age 2 " Tinsley
I know from my late mother in law that years ago parts of Tinsley were classed as Rotherham so perhaps some room for mix up there. I have tried to find baptisms for the children but no joy. The mother Kate was said to have been born in Ireland so perhaps they were Catholics (or is that too much of an assumption) Hope you can figure something out from this lot. I think I have spent too much time on it already.
