Attercliffe Common,Sheffield

I would very much like any information on Attercliffe Common 1915/1924.

Have no information on my Grandfather from 1912 when he lived at Farnworth until his death in 1924.

My Grandfather William Ernest TITTERINGTON had a jewellery shop and watchmaking busiess at 461 Attercliffe Common 1915/1924. During some of WW1 he worked as an instument maker in a munitions factory in the region.

April 20 1924 address at death given as 461 Attercliffe Common.

Regards,

Margaret

Thake a look at Picture Sheffield http://www.picturesheffield.com There are some photos of the area of Attercliffe Common where your relative had his shop. Annoyingly there isn't one of 461 but you can get a good impression about the area where he worked. The area was distinctly industrial and his shop was in the centre of the Sheffield Steel industry.

Hi Margaret

The Picture Sheffield website has a large number of photographs of Attercliffe Common. I found one photo of 441 Attercliffe Common. From the 1911 Sheffield trade directory (on-line at Historical Directories)your grandfather lived in the area between Carbrook Street and Bee Street opposite St Bartholomew's Church and the Pheasant Inn. The 1903 Alan Godfrey map of Attercliffe shows a Mrs Clara Hopkin, Dressmaker at 461 Attercliffe Common. Just checked the Britain from Above website and they have 4 photos from 1921 of Attercliffe Common and surrounding works.

Hi Philip,

Thank you for the information. I have looked at the 441 Attercliffe Common and gives me some idea of where my Grandfathers business was.
Are the photos you mention from the Britain from Above, any better.
Are there street directories on-line that would give me my Grandfathers name and business.

Regards,

Margaret

Re: Attercliffe Common,Sheffield

Hi Margaret,

Have you looked at Google Earth to see what the present day area looks like.

The Alan Godfrey maps are always very useful and very inexpensive. Lets you know whats in the area.

Hi Margaret

The Britain from Above photographs show the area of Attercliffe Common and are mainly of the surrounding works. Although Attercliffe Common is recorded in the heading it is difficult to see the houses and Picture Sheffield photos give more detail of the houses.

Re: Attercliffe Common,Sheffield

My family the Aldertons lived at 459 Attercliffe Common
from 1905 to 1946.I have never found any photos of the
house and shops in that block. It was a 3 story house
with a shop at the front and was a tobacconist.

Re: Attercliffe Common,Sheffield

My Grandfather had his business next door to your family, then.
It is a shame there are no photographs.

Re: Attercliffe Common,Sheffield

I'm doing a study of a family with a Titterington ancestor in at present. As the name is very unusual it might be worth swapping notes about members of the family.

Re: Attercliffe Common,Sheffield

Is Titterington your ancestor? If the Titterington is in the same ancestor line as mine, I can certainly give you some notes.
My ancestors came from Lancaster and the beautiful Lake District

Re: Attercliffe Common,Sheffield

This Titterington also came from Lancashire. She was Ellen Titterington who married Richard Titterington in Salford in 1911.I'm doing a study for a friend

I have an Ellen Jane who married in 1885, Kendal , so not the same.
However, I have 100+ pages of the family tree, so will have a look and see if I can help.
