I have checked our 1841 census information over to the left and as you said no Betsey/Elizabeth Pagdin/Pagden in the Sheffield area.

What info do you have on her that makes you think she was in the Sheffield area?????

Sorry just noticed you think she was a Chatwin by 1836.....

There are NO Chatwin's in Sheffield up to 1961.

It was a Jane Chatwin in 1861. from Suffolk.

There are two Elizabeth Chatwins.

One the 1891 census and unmarried
The other on the 1841 census married to a Henry.

Both are in London.

Just looked at a cd (done by Lincs FHS) there is a baptism of a Betsey PAGDON on 29th June in 1811 in Gainsborough daughter of William and Mary is this who you are looking for? I will try and see if there is a marriage for her in a bit in the same area. John

No marriage for Betsey in Gainsborough area (cd only goes upto 1837) but there is a marriage for a William Pagdin to a Mary Jackson on 5th Dec 1799. Hope this helps.

I note that Mark states - Chatfield - not (Chatwin)
Any detail about the suggested marriage ,and other background information,would prove helpful

thanks for all of your help, i see everyones having the same trouble as me locating betsey after she married a "CHATFIELD" IN LINCS, i have her birth, and her marriage from freereg or freebmd, BUT after this no trace in a census.her parents were william pagdin and mary pagdin(jackson)of gainsbrough, lincs, i will be honest i have been looking for her on and off for 3 months, which is why i turned to this forum for help, so i know she is being elusive.

who did she marry and when and where? Is there a possibility she could have died during childbirth and hence will not be on a census? John

i am certain the marriage was from freereg as freebmd does not start until 1837, THE MARRIED NAME WAS CHATFIELD IN GAINSBROUGH, LINCOLNSHIRE, YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL because the PAGDIN name was mispelt by clergy and family as PAGDEN, PAGDIN, i have NOT found a death only a marriage to CHATFIELD , unknown first name, i have used BETSEY CHATFIELD 1811 to search the census records on FMP, but no results

I have found the marriage I think you are refering to in the parish records section on FMP. It tells me the date 22 Sep 1836 but the place it says Dioceses of Canterbury ( other marriage on the page give places) does that give us a clue to where she tied the knot? John

I think diocese of canterbury IS NOT A PLACE but a religion,all my pagden family are lincolners apart from a few who moved to sheffield in 1841, and a couple who headed south to london, so on this assumption betsey must have married in lincolnshire. so in 1841 census she would be aged 30 and somewhere on a census, !!!

Right then sorry if I seem silly posting this - yoou are definitely sure that Betsey married a Chatfield. Do you know if they had any children and if so have you any names - it might be that the surname of the children is spelt correctly on the census index. My suspicions are that Betsey died before 1841. However there is something else that we have overlooked, will have a think overnight. Could Betsey's husband have died and Betsey then remarried before 1841 and finally just because she was baptised in 1811 does not mean she was born then - she might have been born much earlier and not necessarily in Gainsborough. Going to give my brain cells a rest - back on it tomorrow if time permits. John

Sorry about that it was a typo on my part. I typed Chatwin but the info was for the Chatfield surname.

I was looking at Ancestry and the census returns there.
I also checked our 1841 census index as well as the 1861 census index from S&DFHS.

I think we can safely say that that CHATFIELD family hide from the enumerator.

If you look at FreeBMD you will see there is a John CHATFIELD & Winifred Commons who married in 1839 and started reproducing.
The only marriage of interest was much later March of 1860.
Joseph William CHATFIELD and Jane "Elizabeth" Bonsor Cocking.

Hope this helps rule out the Sheffield equation.

a robert chatfield married a ann pagdin in 1836, i have been informed, but i am sure as is john that the same name CHATFIELD , is listed as a marriage partner to betsey, the problem is i usually print off all the searches i find and put in a file, as yet i cant find this marriage, i am sorry if i have wasted anyones time on this and i will pursue it again this weekend and let you know how it goes. right i have found the printed marriage search, and i know how i have betsey as married, i have entered the details again and i got a green star on fmp which means a definite match on the details entered, it reads as follows, "marriage 22 sept 1836 PAGDEN to chatfield, it does not have a first name for the bride,allthough it says definite match on my search details, so if the brides name is missing how did it give me a definite match !!!!, i will have to be carefull in futer on fmp, and so its back to looking for betsey, thankyou all and again sorry if i wasted anyones time
