Hi Moira
The only death I could find was for an Elizabeth Briggs age 16 in St. Peter's churchyard in 1845.
Death date fits but age is is not correct but I give you the details anyway.
Elizabeth Briggs 15 Jun 1845, age 16, Allen St, daug of James

Hi Sue,
Thankyou for the reply.
I have Elizabeth on the 1841 census and her age is rounded down to 55yrs.
Her husband Benjamin was buried at the Cathedral in 1836
but as you say Elizabeth does not appear to have been
buried with him.
Moira.
when Elizabeth married Benjamin was that her second marriage so is buried with her first husband.
Hi John,
Elizabeth (Chapman) married Benjamin Briggs in 1806
at Sheffield Parish Church.
When Benjamin was buried in 1836,his age was given as 65yrs giving a birth date of around 1771.
The closest I can find a birth for Elizabeth is one in
1782 and one in 1786. This would make her quite a bit younger than Benjamin so it could be possible that there is a previous marriage.
Surely though, she would have been buried as
Elizabeth Briggs.
Many thanks,
Moira.
Hello Moira
There is only one Sheffield death registration for June Qtr and that woud appear to be the 16 yr old thar Sue mentioned earlier.
There is always the possibility that Elizabeth could have re-married after Benjamins death.

Do not know if this is relevant but in Jun quarter of 1841 in Sheffield there is a marriage of a Elizabeth Briggs this would just be after the census. it was a common name so of course might be totally wrong. John
Sorry everyone,
Because I could not find Elizabeth on the 1851 census
I presumed that she had died.
I have found two more deaths on Free BMD - one in 1854 and the other in 1857.
I am also going to follow up on the later marriage.
Thanking you all for your input.
Kind regards,
Moira.
Hi Moira
These two burials may help
BRIGGS, Elizabeth (age of 59) Resided at St John St and buried on 3 Mar 1857. St. Mary, Bramall Lane
BRIGGS, Elizabeth (age of 83) Resided at Attercliffe and buried on 11 Sep 1854 Christ Church, Attercliffe Cemetery, Sheffield
This burial looked closest but needs looking into further
BRIGGS, Elizabeth (age of 77).Resided at Hammond St and buried on 1 Apr 1866 General , NC Cemetery, Sheffield

No problem, we have all made the same mistake ie not finding someone on a census presumed they had died when in fact they could have remrried. Please keep us updated on what you find and I am sure people will then assist you even further. John

Hi again
This burial looks interesting in view of Hughs findings, age is out to the 1841 but the address looks familiar
TAYLOR, Elizabeth (age of 75).Resided at Sheffield,Colliers Row and buried on 3 Oct 1854 Sheffield Cathedral Cemetery, Sheffield.

Hi again everyone,
I thought my Elizabeth was the one baptised 10 Sept 1786
at Sheffield parish church, dau of Jonathan and Sarah
Chapman.
I have found Elizabeth Taylor on the 1851 census at
62 Colliers Row aged 70. She is a widow 'on parish'
and her place of birth is Ulley, Yks.
It's all very puzzling.
Moira.
Hi Moira
I think the marriage of Elizabeth Briggs to William Taylor is probably correct. If you obtain this marriage certificate, it will give the name of her father and confirm your findings.

Thankyou everyone for your help.
I will pay a visit to the archives as soon as I can,
and will let you know the outcome.
Moira.
Hi Everyone,
I managed to go to Sheffield Archives at the weekend and here is the update:
The marriage of Elizabeth Briggs to William Taylor in 1841. Elizabeth's father is named as Peter Bellamy, collier.
The marriage of Elizabeth Chapman to Benjamin Briggs in 1806, Elizabeth is a widow.
There is a marriage at Treeton (early Ulley residents
used the Church at Treeton) in 1784 between Peter Bellamy and Hannah Spacy but they appear to have had some children baptised at Sheffield Parish Church.
I can not find a marriage between an Elizabeth Bellamy and a man with the surname of Chapman.
The only one I found was between John Chapman and
Elizabeth Chester in 1804 at Sheffield Parish Church.
Also, I cannot find a baptism for an Elizabeth Bellamy.
Back to the drawing board I think.
Kind regards,
Moira.
Right, thinking cap on time again. I will have a closer look at your findings and see I can solve anything for you. Might be a few days though. John
There is a Baptism record on the S&DFHS CD for an ELIZA Bellamy on the 21/12/1794. Father Peter Bellamy Mother Hannah.
Peter's occupation is shown as Collier.
Joy
That means she would have been twelve when she first married!!!!!!!!!!
John S,
I put the details of that Baptism on as the Fathers details appear to tie in with the Fathers details on the Marriage of Elizabeth Briggs and William Taylor in 1841!!
She could have been Born some years prior to her Baptism, her Parents Married 1784!!
Joy
Sorry Joy, forgot about she could have been baptised at 10 years old. Silly me for forgetting a thing like that. John
Hi Joy,
I had seen the baptism for Eliza but discounted it because of the year.
It did'nt cross my mind that it could have been a late baptism.
I might go to the Archives again and see if it actually gives her age.
Many thanks,
Moira.
