Where was your mother born ?
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Amelia Carter

Hi Daryl
I couldn't find a birth for a Lucy Carter in either Mar or Jun qtr 1918-which is when your mother should have been registered. I did find this birth
LUCY RICHARDSON Jun 1918 Sheffield 9c 982 mothers name CARTER

Could your grandmother Amelia never married and Lucy was always known with her mother's maiden name?
Just a idea.
Regards
Sue

Re: Amelia Carter

information still sketchy. We believe grandfather called Benjamin Carter and was married previously, but don't know first wifes name. Had children with first wife Thomas and Louie? Second query wife Amelia, had children Ivy May and Lucy, date of birth 30.3.1918. Lucy went to Bole Hill School but cannot find her mentioned in your school records. Many thanks for your help. Daryl

Daryl

Do you have a copy of your mother's birth certificate?
This will give you her father's name and occupation along with her mother's name and maiden name.

Re: Amelia Carter

A Benjamin CARTER married Amelia ALTON in 1930.

Amelia RUDDIFORTH married Reginald Herbert ALTON in JUN Qtr 1909

There are 7 ALTON children with mmn RUDDIFORTH at FreeBMD, including Lucy C ALTON in JUN Qtr 1918 and Ivy C in 1924.

In fact three of the children have middle initial'C'. Could this be for CARTER - meaning that Amelia was no longer with Reginald, and was having children with Benjamin?!

Re: Amelia Carter

Reginald Herbert ALTON died on the Somme (1916).

Of the seven children I mentioned the last was much later and doesn't fit the hypothesis. 4 children born 1918-24 can't be Reginald Herbert's if he died in 1916. Possibly Benjamin's first wife was still living so they couldn't marry until 1930.

Re: Amelia Carter

I think Hugh is spot on there. Kellys 1923 directory lists a Mrs Amelia Alton at 23 Heavygate Ave, so looks like it was her house and Benjamin wasn't officially head of household.

Re: Amelia Carter

Had to stick my nose in a little here....LOL
but thought you might be interested in a few observations...

Heavygate Ave, is one of my old stomping grounds so know it very very well as both my father and his parents and my mother and hers lived there as did I until aged 9.

It was a Corporation Estate built in the very early 1920's mum was born there in 1921. #67. Dad was at # 47 after his family were moved from Bastock Rd. The houses in the last 20years+ became available for purchase and one of my brothers now lives in one of my grandparents house.

Easy to find on Google Earth though I couldn't make number 23 out though its towards the top of the Ave on the left hand side
going up the avenue. From Google earth you get a good idea of the view looking towards Stannington.

Bole Hill School was about a five min walk away. Was a community center when I last saw it in 2005. I believe it was built in 1894. The children now go to Burgoyne Rd School & Myers Grove Comp.

Elaine in Ottawa.

Re: Amelia Carter

Big thanks to everyone. The information re. the names Alton and Ruddeforth have openened up a whole mass of information for me. Seems Amelia had 3 Children with Reginald Alton before he was killed on the Somme and a further 4 (including Lucy) with Benjamin Carter. The fact that they did not marry until 1930 meant that the children were all known as Alton until after the marriage. Any help with Benjamin Carter would be gratefully accepted. Thenks again.

hello Daryl,

Do you know when and where Benjamin was born? Also where and when he died? Was he a soldier in WW1?

Re: Amelia Carter

Only reference to Benjamin Carter that I can find on Ancestry, is his marriage to Amelia Alton in 1930. Family believed that he was from Sheffield, but unsure. Can find no reference to his death. Difficult to trace him without census after 1911.

Re: Amelia Carter

I wonder if it would be a good idea to get the marriage cert of benjamin Carter to Amelia Alton in 1930 that would hopefully give his fathers name, his age (hope they didn't put "full") and also the witnesses could give you more clues.

Re: Amelia Carter

Daryl

John
I think obtaining the marriage certificate,is a good idea.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Amelia Carter

Just received a copy of the marriage certificate of Benjamin Carter and Amelia Alton. Fathers name Edward Benjamin Carter (Hammer Driver).
Benjamin a widower on marriage in 1930 (age 53).
Amelia Alton (maiden name Ruddiforth (age 43).
I think your suggestion that Benjamins previous marriage was to Florence Harriet Mycock who died in 1926, was correct and that he was already separated when he moved in with Amelia and started a new family in 1918.
More investigating for me. Many thanks and will let you know what I find.
