Abraham Bamforth in 1911

I am having problems finding Abraham/Abram Bamforth b.1836 in the 1911 on Ancestry. I have found him on every census back to 1841-his birthplace varies Wisewood/Loxley/Wadsley/Ecclesfield. In 1901 he is living at Brickfield, Top Wincobank

Abram Banford(Bamforth) 65 Forgeman b. Wisewood
Jane Banford 64 Wife
Alfred Banford 30 son Labourer
Lydia Banford 23 daug
Samuel Banford 21 son Forgeman
Lizzie Bangorth 11 Daug
Piece: 4332 Folio: 159 Page Number: 9

Jane dies in 1906 and I have found this death

Abram Bamforth Mar 1914 Sheffield 9c 833 age 78

Lydia and Lizzie are married by 1911 and I have found them, but I also cannot find Alfred b.1871 and Samuel b. 1880. Most of the this Bamforth family live in the Wincobank/Brightside area and I presume Abraham would not move far away.
Can anyone find him?
Regards
Sue

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Sue
i have had a real good look for Alfred, and Samuel.
I too have been unable to locate them , (even)on another genealogy site, despite trying various techniques to locate them.
This has to be down to a transcription error,or for some reason the records are missing.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Brian
Thanks for looking. I will get the death certificate of Abram to find his last address if nobody else can locate him.
Many thanks

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Sue, could Abraham have gone abroad by 1911 and then come back? There is a Mr bamforth going to New York in October 1906 and gives his status as single and his job as a Mech (mechanic I think) Probably totally barmy and wrong though. John

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi John
My Abraham was a forgeman/blacksmith which I think is not quite the same as a mechanic. Is there any other information?
Thanks for looking.

Not really, it was just said a Mr Bamforth single went to New York it might not have been Abraham. Will keep looking.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Sue
Annoyingly, still no results regarding Abraham,Alfred,or Samuel on the 1911.
Normally when one locates other family members,it can help flush out elusive close family ,that are mistranscribed, and appear with other family members.
I reckon it's highly unlikely that all three were omitted from the 1911,it's got to be a mistranscription.
The address on the 1901- is somewhat unhelpful.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Brian
Brickfields, I think, was part of, or near, the then new Flower Estate model village. Abraham's daughter Lydia b.1877 is living in Brickfields in 1911. She married Edmund Ellis. ED 26 Piece: 27985

I've looked through their neighbours census and I couldn't find them there.
I agree it must be a mistranscription.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi

There's an Abram Bamforth listed in the 1911 trade directory as a forgeman, living 59 Dearne Street Sheffield. Is that him?

Heths

EDIT : just looked that address up and it says head of household Abram Bamforth aged 52 born Brightside, but then he's crossed out. It says convalescent Southport in the infirmity column. So looks like he's too young for your man, maybe his son? Convalescent home on Promenade Southport also has him as age 52, iron work forgeman born Sheffield

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Sue
The fact that Abraham,Alfred ,and Samuel- don't show on the 1911,is really bugging me now.
I wonder why Brickfields doesn't come up on a street search on fmp ?
Some bright spark on this site has to stumble on one of them.
The search continues.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Heather
The Abram Bamforth you found was born in 1859 and is Abram Bamforth's (b.1836) son, also a forgeman. For some reason Abram junior is listed twice in 1911. His wife Clara has included him on the 59 Dearne St census and then somebody has crossed him out, because he was actually in hospital in Southport( there some more rearching!).

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Brian
I don't use FMP, but I noticed on some of the census forms in 1911, Brickfields was also called Brickfields Terrace or try The Terrace.
Its worth a try.
Hope this helps

Sue
Hi,I have just located the street on fmp,as you suggest it shows as - Brickfields Terrace - Shiregreen.
The houses listed are numbered 13/14/15/16/17/18,and sadly no luck with the search there.
Kind regards Brian.

Sue
I have just looked at the 1911 census detail- enumerators list regarding Brickfields Terrace
It shows 11 and 12 as Brickfields, and 13,14/15/16/17/18- as Brickfields terrace.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Just checked some other directories. 1901, 1905 and 1911 all have an Abraham Bamford listed as a shopkeeper in Upper Wincobank. But aaaarggh!!!! frustratingly! none of them say which street. You are going to have to find this man because its driving me round the bend

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Heather
He is very elusive! I didn't think my Abraham Bamforth was a shopkeeper but thanks for looking. I have ordered the death certificate and will come back to the search when I get it.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Sue, Have you the death certificate of his wife from 1906 and if so where were they living then? John

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

John
Hopefully, when Sue Obtains Abraham Bamforth's death certificate,it might prove helpful,But Sue is stiil wanting to know why there seems to be no details on Abraham's Sons either,Alfred Bamforth B 1871 ,and Abraham
Bamforth B 1880,on the 1911 ?.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi John and Brian
I haven't got Jane Bamforth's death certificate. I think I will wait and see what information appears on Abraham's death cert first. I would like to know where Alfred b.1871 and Samuel b.1880 are in 1911, but they are as elusive as their father Abraham. I am sure they are alive in 1911. I have found these possible deaths
Alfred Bamforth Mar 1925 Sheffield 9c 703 age 54
Samuel Bamforth Mar 1952 Sheffield 2d 124 age 72

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Sue
I too spotted the potential death records of Alfred, and Samuel, and think they are likely to be the right records.
I was hoping to locate a potential spouse to the brothers, that might help flush out either Alfred,or Samuel.
I like you sue, despite many ideas, and searches- have drawn a blank.
I am keen to know what Abraham Bamforth's death certificate reveals?.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Everyone
The GRO have been super quick in sending the death certificate of Abram Bamforth-received this morning.
Details

Abram Bamforth died 13-3-1914 at 111 Wincobank Avenue age 78, formerly Steel Forgeman. He died of Cerebral Thrombosis and Exhaustion. Informant was A. Bamforth, son, present at death, 111 Wincobank Avenue.

I presume A. Bamforth is son Alfred b.1871. I couldn't find the address on Ancestry. Can anyone else find it?
Regards
Sue

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Sue - The exact address 111 Wicobank Avenue, does not show up on fmp,109 then jumps to 115.
To add to this fmp is playing up a bit.
I have just managed to re edit the reply,I have checked all the entries for Wincobank Avenue 121 - in total ) for Abraham Bamforth- without result.
The search continues.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Brian
Thanks for looking. I grew up in the Wincobank Ave area-know it well. I think 111 was the Flower Estate end. The house may not have been built in 1911- it was a new estate then. It still doesn't explain where Abram was living. Maybe one day some new information will discover him. At least I now know his last residence.
Many thanks for all your help.
Sue

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Sue
I won't forget this chaps name,it will be inprinted in my mind.
I was hoping, very nuch that the Death certificate - could be the key to unlock Abrahams whereabouts on the 1911.
And there is still the mystery of why Afred, and Samuel Bamforth- Abraham's sons don't show - on the 1911.
Kindest regards Brian.

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

Hi Sue,

I think you're right - the 1911 directory only has house numbers as far 22 and 23 Wincobank Avenue. Looks like the rest must have been built later.

111 Wincobank Avenue was really close to Brickfields Terrace. 1923 directory goes: 85 Wincobank Ave, 14 The Terrace, 16 The Terrace and then 111 Wincobank Ave. (On the other side of the road the directory jumps from 96 to 118 Wincobank Ave, with a Bluebell Rd in between)

Re: Abraham Bamforth in 1911

The enumerator made a mistake and didn't record 111 and 113, possibly due to them being recently renumbered from 19, 20 Brickfields.

I have a lot of info on Abraham and other Bamforths, including photos and newspaper clippings. Please get in touch if this would be of interest. His niece Sarah Jane was my G/Grandmother.

Ted
