Sheffield relative in Northallerton prison 1880s

I have located my relative, Frederick Walter Oates (b 1865) in Wakefield prison in 1891, and then dying at Northallerton Gaol in 1890.

Can anyone please direct me as to the best source of information about his offending history?

I'm researching from Australia, so I cannot attend in person at records or archives offices, but I was wondering if there is any online or on-request information I might find or buy.
Cheers, Judy

Was he a Sheffield man, as I am just transcribing the calendars of prisoners for Sheffield archives and I could look on those

The newspaper article gives a death date of 1890 so were have you found him in 1891?

Re: Sheffield relative in Northallerton prison 1880s

Dear John
Thank you so much for your reply and generosity. I am ecstatic to have these articles about Fred Oates. He is my great-grandfather's eldest sibling. His father and another sibling were publicans (and I've been able to trace them in the various pubs they operated in Sheffield) and I think alcohol was pretty significant in their lives. As an Aussie, that makes quite bit of sense to me!
Again, thanks - I owe you a pint when I finally get to Sheffield one day.

Dear Angela and Sue

I am so grateful for your generosity - and sorry I stuffed up on the date of death (1895, not 1890).

Frederick Oates, iron moulder, born 1865, was in Wakefield prison in 1891(at the census) - for larceny I think. I presume he got out and then was arrested for the offence at the race course that John sent me the articles about. He died on admission to prison at Northallerton in 1895 and there was an inquest. He's now interred at City Road with his mother's relatives - I've found the grave.

Any information from prison records from Wakefield in 1891 or Northallerton in 1895 would be fabulous. But I can't believe the generosity of people such as yourselves, helping others like me who are miles away, trying to uncover their Sheffield ancestry. I am humbled.
