The 1911 shows Herbert Vickers as being 24 b Sheffield ,and a general labourer in the machine shop of a steel factory.
His wife Ada is- 30 and b in Rotherham.
They live at 4 clough st Masbro Rotherham,a four roomed house.
They have no children ,and at that time the marriage has lasted 4 years.
Herbert Married Ada Warden in Rotherham in the last qtr of 1906.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: family history

Wow Brian Thanks for that. You're bit quicker than me being 'silver surfer' and still learning. Uncle Bert must have started to learn the trade on the shop floor as definitely eventualy part owner (unless the family embellished the story!)Can you help further please Where is the best place to look for info on the steel works that Bert would have worked. Might help if I knew the name. By all accounts they went bankrupt. This was probably in the 50s. Many thanks for any help and directions. Ann

I am not sure about the steel works Herbert could have worked for.
Herberts address in 1911 - 4 Clough St Masbro Rotherham - might give a few pointers to a likely steel works.
I think that the vickers connection, and suggestion of part ownership- is an embellishment, unless someone states otherwise.
Having looked at the family on the 1891/1901 census - the family is working class.
There is a wealth of detail regarding the family,on the census returns.
Kind regards Brian.

Re: family history

Hi Ann,

Having access to the census 1841 to 1911 is a must when starting out with family history. We can guide you where you should be looking but the fun part is actually searching for yourself.

If the firm went bankrupt I am sure there would be a newspaper article about them.

Business Directories might help. (Library or Archives)

AND our getting started pages over to the left has lots of useful information at the beginning its read read read. But its fun and very addictive.

Hope this helps.

Elaine in Ottawa.

Re: family history

English Steel Corporation with HQ on Brightside Lane was the Sheffield part of the vast Vickers Group of companies. I worked there in R&D in the 60's. The Managing Director at the time was Mr W D (Bill) Pugh . The research Superintendent was Mr J Russell.
Unless there was another Vickers company in Sheffield ( & I can't find it) I think the story must be incorrect

Re: family history

The nearest Steelworks to Clough Road would have been Habershons. Next nearest would have been Steel, Peech and Tozer. But I guess there would have been smaller and closer steelworks. Vickers has a long and detailed history. A bit of information regarding the company can be viewed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers
