Western Road Council School

I had an uncle who I did not know. I have found through this site that he went to Crooksmoor School and left in 1929 to go to Western Road Council School.

I have just acquired a Certificate of Merit for him dated 1934 for Western Road Council School.

Does anyone know if this is something that is given when leaving school.

Are the records available for this school. I am mainly looking for the address that my uncle lived while attending this school.

Any help or advice whould be much appreciated.

Hi Betty,
If you give us the name of the family we might be able to check the address through the directories.

Re: Western Road Council School

Thanks for that.

That would be great.

The parents name would be Hugh Dronfield.

In 1942 their address was 273 St Mary Road.

When the son Gerald Dronfield and my mum Mary went to primary their address was Burns Road.

I believe at some time in their lives they lived in a small holding and the land was taken over by the ministry before the second world war.

Why do we leave things until there is no one in the family to ask such questions.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Betty,
I don't have directories that go that far but I know someone who does so I will ask him. Are you sure they moved from Burns Road when Gerald went to Western Road School as it's not far away? Which years do you believed they moved?

Re: Western Road Council School

Looking at the school entries on this site Gerald, my uncle, was at Burns Road until 1929. Then records show that my mum was still at Burns Road in 1932. Reason for leaving was to move on to secondary.

The year on the certificate of Merit is 1934 but that might just be the year that kind of certificate came in to being.

They are definitely in Queen Mary Road in 1942 when my grandmother died.

If you can access directories for the period 1934 to 1942 that would be great. Even if it just tells us how long prior to 1942 they were in Queen Mary Road.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Re: Western Road Council School

I looked at some electoral registers in the Local Studies Library:

Robert and Priscilla JONES are at 3ct,1 Burns Road in the roll for 1935/6.

In the volume for 1936/7 the voters listed are William Henry and Eva COATES.

So they must have left Burns Road between those dates..

I tried looking for the later address but I was confused by the fact, which I now see, that you have given two different street names 'St Mary Road' which I automatically assumed was St Mary's Road; and then Queen Mary Road, which I'm guessing is the right one.

In 1951 there was a Robert Jones at 471 Hastilar Road South which I think must be in the same area as Queen Mary Road.

edit: I meant to add that there were no electoral rolls in Sheffield after 1939/40 until May 1945.

Re: Western Road Council School

Thanks Hugh for trying to find information for me.

I am sorry about the address. It should have read Queen Mary Road.

It is funny that the address for Robert Jones in 1951 was 471 Hastilar Road South. That is the address given on my grandfather's second wifes death certificate in 1951.

Another coincidence is that Priscilla was the name of my grandmother.

I think in an earlier directory my grandfather is down as Hugh Dranfield instead of Dronfield.

Thanks for your help.
