Help with Benjamin Sargent

Hello

One of my ancestors was Benjamin Sargent. He married Hannah Cowin at Sheffield St Peter & St Paul on the 6th April 1779. They had 4 children in Sheffield and Masbrough. He worked as a bricklayer. He died in 1813 aged 56.
The problem i have is finding out where Benjamin was born. It looks as though the surname Sargent is not popular at all in the Sheffield region and up north in general. How can i find out more info?
The details and witnesses on the marriage record do not help.
I've hit a stand still

any help much appreciated

Thanks
Richard

Re: Help with Benjamin Sargent

Checked the Baptism CD from Sheffield &District Family History Society and can't see his baptism at St Peter's.

Re: Help with Benjamin Sargent

Hi Richard,

What I do in cases like this is to use Family Search.

You know the year he married. I take 25 years off that date.

Then go to Family Search and I used 1750 to 1760

It came up with this which you would need to research to either accept it or not.

arents: Benjamin Sargant, Sarah

name: Benjamin Sargant
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 12 Mar 1758
baptism/christening place: ALL SAINTS,NORWICH,NORFOLK,ENGLAND
father's name: Benjamin Sargant
mother's name: Sarah
indexing project (batch) number: C05526-1
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 993667

Fingers crossed.

Re: Help with Benjamin Sargent

Thanks for the replies.

Because i know his age at death i know he was born circa 1757. The one you found could possibly be him but there is another one in Hastings that could be him. I could do with proof of where he came from. I can't put him down just because his age adds up to one of those on the IGI.

Thanks again

That means you would have to have a look at the PR's for Norwich for that time period.

Check if they have an apprenticeship list for bricklayers.

Join a mailing list for Norwich. Local folks maybe have material that would indeed prove his birth or at least suggest where you can get material.

Find who his brothers and sisters were. Then check if your Benjamin calls some of his children the same names.

Thats a start.
