Hi All,
I am looking for some advice. My ancestor's sibling was Cora King who was born near Huddersfield in 1847 to James King & Ann Haigh/Hague (changes on different docs). I havnt located Cora's baptism yet, but her parents were married in a CofE church and i've located baptisms for 2 siblings in a CofE church.
Cora herself married William Gosnay at St Jude, Moorfields and their first child was baptised at the Cathedral.
Looking at baptisms on this site to see if I could locate the baptisms of their further children, i've found a catholic baptism of a Cora Maria Zechias Gosnay in 1889 which gives a date of birth as 20th May 1949 and parents Anna Hague & Jacobi. The abode of this Cora is Woodland Little Matlock which is exactly where my Cora was in 1881 and 1891. This is obviously my Cora with 2 middles names that she didnt have before. Would there be any reason at all why she did this?
She did re-marry to a Harry Vincent Wright, but this marriage didnt take place until 1893, though I havnt located where it took place yet.
When Cora was baptised, there is also a baptism of a Maria Gosnay on the same day of the same abode with the same parents, though this lady's date of birth is 4th June 1885 so its not the same parents a Cora's. The only thing I can think of is that Cora did have a daughter called Minnie who was born circa 1885.
I would really appreciate any guidance.
Regards
Claire
I see that both of those baptisms had a note after them, which said "conditionaliter...." Maybe someone who has got the original image can tell you what the rest of the note says in case that gives any sort of clue.

I noticed that note too and wondered what it meant. I have found Cora's baptism on familysearch and it was at Tankersley! Very odd considering that she was born in Huddersfield, though her mother was from this area. Another sibling was also baptised at Tankersley. They must have got fed up of travelling back by the 3rd child.
Cora was buried at Stannington Church so I really am curioius to why she appears to have been baptised as an adult in a RC church.
Hi Claire,
I've checked the original and found that Maria's parents were William (Gulielmi)and Cora Maria King.
There was a mistake in the transcription and I,as checker, should have picked it up. (Mea culpa!)
The record has been amended.
The word "conditionaliter" means "conditionally". There may have been doubt as to whether they had already been baptised.
Regards,
Tim
I wonder if the adoption of the name 'Zechias' (which I think is a variant of Zaccheus) could be relevant to the conversion to Catholicism?
His story is in Luke: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+19%3A1-10&version=KJV

(ps, I didn't know that, I just google it
)
Many thanks Tim for checking the original. William & Cora didnt have a child named Maria, but they had a Minnie around the time this Maria's date of birth so I can only assume Maria/Minnie are the same person. However, she doesnt become Maria on any census or later records at all.
Cora never shows with those middle names at any time later either. I dont think her 2nd husband is Catholic either as he is buried in the same grave as Cora, her first husband and three of their deceased children at Stannington Church.
I find this really intriguing as its clearly my family member but with no explanation to why she did it when she doesnt appear to have maintained any catholicism afterwards.
That is an interesting find you got there Hugh :)
Ah, Maria Gosnay is my Minnie Gosnay. I've just looked at documents I have for Minnie when she travelled to Canada and she gives her date of birth as 4th June 1886. This ties in with her registration in the birth indexes.
On the baptism, the 4th June is correct but the year is given incorrectly as 1885. I know this maybe what is on the record but thought it might be worth just checking as it should be 1886.
Hi Claire,
I have looked at the original and the priest made a number of errors on this entry and then went back to correct them.
Mother & daughter were indeed baptised on the same day.
Dec 1st 1889.
Maria the daughters birthdate is indeed 4th June 1885. So that part I can't change. Will check with FreeBMD and if its 1886.
will make a note on the entry.
What hair my hubby had has now gone with these priests and their writing. LOL.
BUT its at least going on line.......
Take care and thanks for letting us know.
Elaine in Ottawa.
District: Bradfield
Birth - 35/85
Details: Minnie GOSNAY - 01/01/1886
Looks right as Little Matlock was/is at Stannington. Which would have fallen into the Bradfield Registration District.
The priest probably couldn't find a Latin way of saying Minnie so used Marie. Just a guess.
Ok so I will make that note on the entry.
